SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Zane Kelly was named Mountain West Player of the Week on Monday after a brilliant performance in the Aztecs’ home sweep of Nevada, May 1-3. The announcement was made by the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
With his award, Kelly garnered his third career MW weekly accolade (two freshman, 2024), giving SDSU nine such honorees this season.
A native of Las Vegas, Nevada, Kelly hit safely in all three games against the Wolf Pack, recording an impressive team-best slash line of .714/.833/1.527 with one homer, five RBIs and five runs scored, as the Aztecs took over sole possession of first place in the Mountain West. In addition, he went 2-for-2 with runners in scoring position for the series, helping SDSU to its first sweep of Nevada since 2013.
In the series opener, the Aztec right fielder smacked two doubles and drew three walks while scoring two runs, as the Scarlet and Black earned a dramatic 7-3 victory. Kelly doubled to lead off the fourth inning of that contest, crossing the plate shortly thereafter on an RBI single. He later played a prominent role in SDSU’s dramatic finish in the ninth, reaching on another double before circling the bases on Jake Jackson’s walk-off grand slam.
In game two, Kelly went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, highlighted by a pivotal two-run double with two outs in the eighth, which vaulted the Aztecs into the lead, as SDSU plated four runs in the inning to overcome a 5-4 deficit and ultimately prevail, 8-5. Previously, he singled and scored in the fifth, which knotted the score at 3-3.
Not to be outdone, Kelly provided the big bat in the series finale with a towering three-run homer in the fourth, as the Aztecs rolled to an 8-2 triumph and extended their winning streak to 11 straight games.
Defensively, Kelly converted all 11 chances in right field with one assist, finishing the week with a clean 1.000 fielding percentage.
During SDSU’s active 11-game winning streak, Kelly is hitting .333 (13-39) with six homers and 13 RBIs, posting a team-high .872 slugging percentage and 13 runs scored. He has nine home runs for the season, which is tied for eighth in the Mountain West entering this week.
Kelly and the Aztecs return to the diamond on Tuesday, May 5, when they square off against UC San Diego in a crosstown battle at Triton Ballpark in La Jolla. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. PT.
