RIVERSIDE, Calif. – San Diego State ran into a buzzsaw Tuesday, dropping a 13-3 decision to California Baptist in a non-conference game at James W. Totman Stadium.

In the first meeting between the two squads since 2019, the Aztecs (6-15) were overpowered by the Lancers, who hit five home runs in the contest, including three by Ben Castelli (6 RBIs) and two by Nicholas Dumesnil (5 RBIs).

CBU (11-10) never trailed in the game, grabbing a 3-0 advantage with two outs in the first on Dumesnil’s solo shot to center, followed by Castelli’s two-run dinger over the high fence in right.

SDSU trimmed the margin in the third when Josh Quezada doubled and scored after Jonathan Smith reached on a throwing error at second base.

However, the Lancers combined for 10 runs in the next three innings to put the contest out of reach.

The Aztecs added single markers in the fourth and fifth, respectively, on Jake Jackson’s RBI single and Nevan Noonan’s run-scoring double, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Cameron Teper (2-1), CBU’s second pitcher of the night, was credited with the victory after fanning three batters in 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits without a walk.

Conversely, Peyton Rodgers (1-2) absorbed the loss for the Scarlet and Black in his first collegiate start. The Torrey Pines High alumnus surrendered seven runs on six hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Evan Miranda (2.0 IP), Thomas Young (0.1 IP) and Xavier Cardenas III (1.0 IP) shut the Lancers down over the final 3 1/3 innings, yielding just one hit and a pair of walks. Miranda recorded five strikeouts in his stint, falling one short of a career high.

Dumesnil (4) and Castelli (3) combined for seven of the Lancers’ 12 hits, while Noonan led the Scarlet and Black with two hits of his own.
