Aztec Swimmers Shine in Crosstown Friendly at USD
Competing in their penultimate meet of the regular season, a contingent of San Diego State swimmers squared off against the University of San Diego in a crosstown friendly Friday at USD Sports Center Pool, winning all 13 scheduled races.
SAN DIEGO – Competing in their penultimate meet of the regular season, a contingent of San Diego State swimmers squared off against the University of San Diego in a crosstown friendly Friday at USD Sports Center Pool.
The Aztecs won all 13 scheduled races vs. the Toreros, led by the freshman duo of Alli Mann and Grace Mering, who captured two event titles each.
Mann was victorious in the 100 butterfly, completing the distance with a time of 54.41, before emerging triumphant in the 100 freestyle with a clocking of 50.55.
Meanwhile, Mering took home the crown in the 200 individual medley after touching the wall at 2:07.71, followed by another winning performance of 2:07.25 in the 200 backstroke.
Not to be outdone, the Scarlet and Black received first-place finishes from nine other competitors, including Alex Roberts in the 100 backstroke (57.21), Moa Bergdahl in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.92) and Eva Allan in the 1,650 freestyle, who completed the race with a season-best time of 17:43.02.
Avery Turney also contributed to SDSU’s win-total with a victory in the 50 freestyle (24.22), joining Kaydence Bispo in the 200 freestyle (1:51.65), Emily Tenczar in the 200 butterfly (2:07.46), Reka Nyiradi in the 500 freestyle (5:07.21) and Elisa Branca in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.15).
Additionally, the Aztecs grabbed the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay, where the combo of Turney and Roberts joined forces with Wilma Johansson and Meredith Smithbaker on a victorious time of 3:29.06, edging the foursome of Bergdahl, Bispo, Mann and Abby Storm, who clocked in at 3:29.11.
Elsewhere, the Scarlet and Black logged eight second-place efforts on the afternoon, including Smithbaker in the 100 breast (1:06.31), Alex Downing in the 100 fly (58.83) and Elsa Fullerton, who recorded a season-fast swim of 18:02.58 in the 1,650 free.
Other runner-up placements on Friday featured Nyiradi in the 200 free (1:53.68), Bergdahl in the 200 IM (2:09.12), Charlotte Sevin in the 200 fly (2:09.33), Bispo in the 100 free (51.90) and Summer West in the 500 free (5:26.60).
San Diego State will play host to USD in a scored dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 25, at Aztec Aquaplex. First swim is set for 9 a.m. PT, and admission is free. The meet will also include 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.
Prior to their home clash with the Toreros, the Aztecs will conduct Senior Day festivities on the pool deck, celebrating the accomplishments of Wilma Johansson, Valentina Lopez Arevalo, Mai McKenna, Alex Roberts, Meredith Smithbaker, Avery Turney, Summer West, Summer Westmoreland, Christiana Williams and Olivia Zamudio.
