FRESNO, Calif. – The San Diego State softball team (24-25, 9-15 Mountain West) bounced back with a 3-1 win at Fresno State (22-23, 11-13 MW) on Friday night.

Kaila Pollard singled for the Aztecs in the top of the first inning. Fresno State loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning before Matti Kwarta induced consecutive flyouts to right field to escape the jam.

Olivia Gigante reached in the second inning on a walk. Kwarta responded to a leadoff single in the latter half with three consecutive outs, concluding the frame with a strikeout.

Kiara Cisneros led off in the top of the third inning with a single. Kwarta retired the side in order in the bottom of the frame.

The Bulldogs struck first in the fourth when starting pitcher Alyssa Ramirez led off with a double before a sacrifice fly by Olivia Hill.

SDSU battled back in the fifth inning. Cisneros and Pollard each singled to set up Ignacio’s three-run blast to left field that accounted for all of the Aztecs’ runs. Faith Jordan entered the circle in the bottom of the inning and, after a leadoff walk, retired the next three hitters, finishing with a strikeout of Mallory Vancleave.

Jordan struck out Ramirez in a 1-2-3 sixth inning.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Aztecs threatened to add to their lead. Cisneros, Lala Macario and Pollard hit three straight singles with one out, but Ramirez navigated her way out of the inning. Jordan faced little resistance from the Bulldog bats in the bottom of the inning, retiring the side in order with another strikeout to close out a 3-1 San Diego State victory.

THE NOTE
Faith Jordan’s save was the first by an Aztec pitcher during a Mountain West game this season. She also had the team’s last save, in a 5-0 win at San Diego on February 26.
