SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Bryce McKnight was named Mountain West Pitcher of the Week on Monday for a pair of outstanding relief appearances against CSUN and Fresno State. The announcement was made by the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
With his award, McKnight garnered his first career MW weekly accolade, giving the Aztecs eight such honorees this season.
A native of Phoenix, Arizona, McKnight was victorious in the two games he pitched last week, posting a 1.13 ERA with 10 strikeouts in eight innings of work, issuing just one walk in 32 batters faced. The Aztec right-hander also limited the opposition to a .143 batting average (2-14) with runners aboard for the week.
Against the Matadors on April 21, McKnight picked up the win after tossing three innings of middle relief, allowing one run on four hits without a walk while recording a pair of strikeouts. In that contest, the SDSU junior stranded two runners in the sixth after a two-out double and a hit batter by inducing an inning-ending flyout. His efforts helped the Aztecs snap a five-game losing streak to CSUN with the 4-3 victory.
McKnight was also summoned from the bullpen on April 25 in the second game of SDSU’s weekend series at Fresno State, where he pitched five scoreless innings, setting a career-high with eight strikeouts to offset three hits and a walk to raise his record to 5-0 on the year. The Arizona transfer escaped a second-and-third jam in the eighth with a swinging strikeout, as the Scarlet and Black pulled away for an 8-5 triumph.
With his performance, McKnight helped the Aztecs complete their first three-game sweep over the Bulldogs in Fresno in program history.
For the season, McKnight owns a spotless 5-0 record with a 3.97 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 45 1/3 innings across 15 games. He currently finds himself among the MW leaders in several categories, including ERA (3rd), wins (T-3rd), opposing batting average (5th, .266) and strikeouts (T-10th).
With McKnight on staff, SDSU leads the conference with a 5.17 team ERA and a .258 opponent batting average while ranking second with 403 strikeouts.
McKnight and the Aztecs will be back in action on Tuesday, April 28, when they play host to Cal State Fullerton at Tony Gwynn Stadium, starting at 6 p.m. PT.
