SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State softball team (23-23, 8-13 Mountain West) bested Boise State (21-30, 7-14 MW) by a 5-1 score on Saturday afternoon at SDSU Softball Stadium.
Key-annah Pu’a retired the side in order in the top of the first inning. Lala Macario led off for SDSU with a single. Kaila Pollard replaced her on the basepaths on a fielder’s choice ahead of a Jade Ignacio single. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Angie Yellen singled back up the middle to give SDSU an early 2-0 lead. Quinn Waiki also singled in the inning, but a double play ended things before another run could cross the plate.
Boise State scored its lone run of the game when Mya Flindt led off in the second inning and homered. Two Aztecs reached base in the bottom of the frame. Jazmin Williams legged out an infield single and Kiara Cisneros walked.
After another three up, three down inning by Pu’a in the third, the Aztecs added to their lead in the latter half of the inning. Pollard led off with a single through the right side and came around to score on an RBI double by Jade Ignacio that found the chalk of the left field line. Two batters later, Waiki launched her fifth homer of the season, a two-run shot out to left field.
Pu’a threw another 1-2-3 frame in the fourth followed by yet another shutout inning in the fifth. In the bottom of the fifth, Ignacio singled, her third base knock of the ballgame.
Ava Schaffel entered the circle in the sixth inning and stranded a runner in scoring position. Matti Kwarta singled into the right field corner in the bottom half for her second collegiate hit.
Following a leadoff single in the top of the seventh, Schaffel got three straight outs to end the game with a San Diego State win, 5-1.
