Softball Heads to Long Beach State; Hosts San Diego Classic This Week

The San Diego State softball team travels to Long Beach State for a midweek game before returning home to host the San Diego Classic.

The Aztecs open the Beach at 5:30 p.m. PT on Wednesday night. SDSU hosts Wisconsin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Princeton at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The game at Long Beach State will be streamed on ESPN+ for paid subscribers.

SDSU is just 33-63 when facing Long Beach State all-time but the Aztecs won the last three meetings between 2023 and 2024. The Beach features several familiar faces: head coach Kendall Fearn was an assistant on The Mesa from 2023-25, Malayna Terrones is Gabriella Terrones’ sister and Jiselle Hernandez is Jayleen Hernandez’ sister. The Aztecs are 4-0 all-time against Wisconsin, with wins coming twice in 2001 and once each in 2011 and 2020. San Diego State is 5-2 against Notre Dame with three wins in the last four meetings, but fell by a 5-4 score in Fullerton last season. SDSU has won both its all-time meetings with Princeton, coming 3-2 in 2012 and 9-3 in 2016. 

Last week, SDSU went 2-3 in the Torero Classic bookended by a 5-0 shutout win over San Diego and a 10-2, five inning win over Kansas City. The Aztecs came up short against CSUN by a 3-1 score and dropped a pair of run rule games against --/No. 24 Washington.

Two-time MW Player of the Week Jade Ignacio leads the Aztec hitters (.435, 1.118 OPS, 3 HR, 19 RBI, 14 R, 7 2B, 4 SB). Jazmin Williams (.400, 1.092 OPS, 15 RBI, 14 R, 4 SB) is coming off a big week, where she hit .467 with a 1.679 OPS, three home runs, a double, a triple, seven RBIs and five runs scored. Other top hitters for SDSU include Olivia Gigante (.259, .828 OPS, 4 HR, 12 RBI, 7 R), Julie Holcomb (.286, 15 R, 7 SB) and Quinn Waiki (.293, .742 OPS, 6 RBI, 5 R). In the circle, Faith Jordan (2.85 ERA, 34.1 IP, 24 K, 4-1, 1 SV) and Matti Kwarta (35.1 IP, 5-2, 3.57 ERA, 18 K) have led the pitching staff. Key-annah Pu’a (2-3, 3.87 ERA, 34.1 IP, 13 K, 1 SV) was selected as MW Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 16.
