SAN DIEGO – San Diego State’s Yasmine Kabbaj has earned Mountain West Women's Player of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 16, the conference announced on Wednesday. The senior from Fes, Morocco captured two wins in the top spot for the Aztecs last week, helping lead the team to its fifth win of the season.
The Scarlet and Black went 1-1 last week, dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 26 Washington on Feb. 22 and bouncing back with a 4-2 victory over Hawai'i on Feb. 23. Kabbaj picked up two wins for the Aztecs in the nail-biter against the Huskies. Alongside doubles partner Ninon Martinache, the duo took down Erika Matsuda and Sophie Luescher on court two by a score of 6-2. Kabbaj carried the momentum into singles play, dominating her first set 6-0 over Matsuda on court one. Kabbaj was able to overcome a rallying performance by the Husky in the second set, earning a 6-4 win.
On Sunday, Kabbaj posted her second two-set win within two days, taking the top court once again. After cruising 6-2 in the first set against Hawai'i's Peppi Ramstedt, the senior put the third point on the board for San Diego State with a 6-3 second set.
The 2024 Mountain West Player of the Year is 3-2 thus far in the 2025 dual season and is looking to lead the Aztecs to their second straight Mountain West Championship.
