Aztecs Finish Second at Fresno State Invite

FRESNO, Calif. – Bolstered by 12 top-five finishes on Saturday, the San Diego State swimming and diving team wrapped up the Fresno State Invitational with a second-place standing among five participating schools at Fresno State Aquatics Center.
 
The Aztecs maintained their grip on the second position with a two-day total of 857 points, trailing only UCLA's tally of 1,207 points, while Washington State (766 pts) took third, followed by the host Bulldogs (535 pts) and San José State (438 pts).
 
With the results, the Scarlet and Black has finished second in all seven appearances at the Fresno State Invitational since 2016.
 
SDSU logged a trio of third-place individual performances, including Minnesota transfer Summer West, who completed a swim of 17:43.10 in the 1650 freestyle, while Paige Mitchell (17:47.94) and Emily Allen (19:03.11) followed in fourth and 10th, respectively.
 
In addition, Meredith Smithbaker placed third in the 100 freestyle with a 51.04 clocking, while Avery Turney touched the wall at 51.40 to place fifth.
 
Subsequently, Christiana Williams completed the 200 breaststroke with a third-place time of 2:16.71, while Moa Bergdahl was sixth after a swim of 2:18.85.
 
Shortly thereafter, the Aztecs picked up a fourth-place result in the 200 butterfly, where Reka Nyiradi finished with a clocking of 2:02.99, while Mai McKenna was 10th at 2:06.83.
 
Earlier in the 200 backstroke, Alex Roberts logged a fourth-place swim of 2:02.56, while Nyiradi was sixth at 2:03.08, followed by Riley Tapley (2:03.63) and Abby Storm (2:05.26), who placed seventh and ninth, respectively.
 
Elsewhere, Valentina Lopez Arevalo was fourth among 16 divers on the 1-meter springboard, racking up 254.80 points, while Summer Westmoreland (236.40 pts) was slotted fifth, followed by Taylor Konopacke (210.50 pts) and Alina Skrocki (209.45 pts), who finished ninth and 10th, respectively.
 
SDSU top two relay teams recorded a pair of fourth-place efforts as well. Roberts joined forces with Bergdahl, Nyiradi and Smithbaker in the 400 medley relay, posting a time of 3:46.81, while the combo of Tapley, Williams, Emily Tenczar and Turney clocked in at 3:47.52 to finish sixth.
 
Later in the 400 freestyle relay, the team of Smithbaker, Alyssa Schiller, Turney and Nyiradi combined for a fourth-place result of 3:28.30, while the quartet of Rachel Hubka, Trine Forss, McKenna and Evonne Stehr logged a 10th-place time of 3:34.50.
 
Rounding out the list of events, Stehr completed a sixth-place swim of 58.50 in the 100 individual medley, while McKenna was a close seventh at 58.62.
 
San Diego State will take an extended break from competition before traveling to the Lone Star State for the Art Adamson Invitational, Nov. 15-17, in College Station, Texas.
