MALIBU, Calif. – The San Diego State swimming and diving team recorded another dominating performance in dual-meet competition on Thursday with a 101-47 triumph over Pepperdine at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
With the decision, the Aztecs registered their 55th consecutive dual-meet victory since Jan. 8, 2018, and kept their unblemished record against the Waves intact at 21-0, including a 13-0 mark in Malibu.
SDSU captured all eight events on the day, winning both relays as well as a diving title to highlight a successful meet. Additionally, the Scarlet and Black posted the top two scoring times in three different individual races and logged a trio of third-place finishes.
The Aztecs set the tone at the outset with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as the team of Evonne Stehr, Meredith Smithbaker, Trine Forss and Avery Turney joined forces for a winning time of 1:44.64, while the quartet of Abby Storm, Christiana Williams, Mai McKenna and Alyssa Schiller took third with a clocking of 1:47.72.
SDSU kept the momentum rolling in the 50 butterfly, as Alex Roberts claimed the event title after touching the wall at 24.20, while reigning Mountain West Freshman of the Week Reka Nyiradi (26.20) finished third, followed closely by Emily Tenczar (26.30).
The Aztecs pocketed another victory in the 50 backstroke thanks to the efforts of Forss, who completed the race in 26.55, while Charlotte Sevin placed third with a swim of 27.30, followed by McKenna, who took seventh in 28.24.
SDSU was mostly unchallenged in the 50 breaststroke, as Williams (29.84) and Stehr (30.86) grabbed the top two spots, while Roberts was sixth (31.27).
Likewise in the 50 freestyle, the Aztecs recorded the top two placements after Schiller (23.17) edged out fellow teammate Smithbaker (24.04), while Emily Allen (24.90) finished sixth.
Next on the docket was the 100 individual medley, where Nyiradi (59.11) emerged victorious just ahead of Moa Bergdahl (59.21), while Summer West (1:00.67) was sixth.
In the final event of the day, the Aztec foursome of Forss, Rachel Hubka, Schiller and Smithbaker captured the crown in the 200 freestyle relay after recording a winning effort of 1:35.22, while the team of Paige Mitchell, Stehr, West and Allen took fourth with a time of 1:39.59.
The Scarlet and Black also had three divers participate in the 1-meter springboard, as Summer Westmoreland took home the event title with 263.03 points, while Alina Skrocki (228.75 pts) landed in the third spot, followed by Taylor Konopacke (214.35 pts), who tied for sixth.
San Diego State continues it weekend excursion on Friday when it competes on the first day of the Fresno State Invitational, starting at 11 a.m. PT with the early session, while the meet reconvenes at 6 p.m. for the evening set of events.
