SAN DIEGO -- Brionne Penny caught three touchdown passes and the Team Pumphrey defense kept Team Sipe out of the end zone in a 28-6 victory Thursday night at San Diego State's annual spring football game.
Playing for honorary head coach Donnel Pumphrey, Penny caught a 2-yard touchdown pass for the White Uni's to end the first half, then a hauled in a 6-yard TD catch and a 20-yarder in the fourth quarter.
Tyrell Shavers opened the scoring for Team Pumphrey with a 4-yard touchdown catch from Will Haskell.
Team Pumphrey put up 286 offensive yards in the game with a running clock in the second half, including 200 through the air.
Team Sipe, led by honorary head coach Brian Sipe, got into Team Pumphrey's side of the field on its opening drive, but a 48-yard field goal by David Delgado did not find the mark.
After trading punts for most of the first quarter, Team Pumphrey got it going, taking advantage of prime starting field position on the Team Sipe's 43-yard line. Haskell connected on consecutive passes to Shavers (16 yards) and Penny (14 yards) to get inside the 10. One play later, Haskell found a slanting Shavers for the first score of the game.
Team Sipe got on the scoreboard late in the second quarter, marching 71 yards on 14 plays over 5:58 before settling for a 22-yard field goal by Collyn Hopkins. Team Sipe converted a third and a fourth down on the drive, the latter coming on a 13-yard pass from Kyle Crum to TJ Sullivan.
Team Pumphrey responded with nine-play, 65-yard drive in just over two minutes (2:06) to score right before halftime. Facing third-and-goal from the 2, true freshman Liu Aumavae found Penny in the end zone to put Team Pumphrey up 11 at the half.
Team Pumphrey looked to extend its lead out of the half, getting all the way to the Team Sipe 2-yard line, going 63 yards on 11 plays. However, safety Cedarious Barfield jumped in front of a pass thrown by Haskell and picked it off in the end zone.
Team Sipe answered with a 10-play, 48-yard drive, but once against had to settle for a field goal, this time a 40-yarder by Delgado. A sack on third down by Darrel Masaniai stalled the drive and forced the field goal attempt.
Team Pumphrey wasted to time on its ensuing drive as Aumavae found true freshman Logan Tanner with a 45-yarder to get deep into Team Sipe territory. Aumavae later connected with Penny to make it a 21-6 game.
Pressing to get back in the game late in the fourth quarter, Marshall Eucker's pass for Team Sipe was intercepted by Joshua Goynes and returned 30 yards. Two players later Eucker, now playing for Team Pumphrey, found Penny open in the corner of the end zone for Penny's third touchdown as the game was called.
Penny had six catches for 66 yards and the three scores to pace the Team Pumphrey offense. Aumavae was 9-for-13 for 96 yards and two touchdowns, while Haskell was 10-for-14 for 78 yards with a touchdown and interception. Team Pumphrey added 86 rushing yards on 19 attempts, including 32 on four carries by Nicholas Gardinera, 27 on three attempts by Martin Blake and 24 on three rushes by Jaylon Armstead.
Team Sipe was held out of the end zone with just 171 yards and two field goals.
Vai Kaho led both defenses with five solo tackles, including two sacks for 12 yards. Four others - Brady Anderson, Seyddrick Lakalaka, Kristien Reyes and Justus Tavai - added five tackles apiece, while Keion Mitchell had a pair of sacks.
