SAN DIEGO -- San Diego State football head coach Brady Hoke announced that 14 student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent on the first two days of early signing period.
The NCAA approved the early signing period in 2017, which runs this year from Dec. 15-17. The mid-year 2-4 (junior college) transfer signing period also commenced today and lasts through Jan. 15, 2022, while the regular signing period is slated for Feb. 2-April 1, 2022.
The Aztecs' early signing class features nine on offense and five on defense. The 14-player class also has nine from the state of California, two from Hawaii, and one each from Nevada, Texas and Maryland. All 14 of the prospects are high school seniors.
Additional signees could be added in the coming days.
Of the nine signees on offense, three are offensive linemen - Drew Azzopardi (Pacifica, Calif./Junipero Serra High), Laakea Kapoi (Makakilo, Hawaii/Saint Louis School) and Rambo Mageo (Laie, Hawaii/Cathedral Catholic High (Calif.)). SDSU also has two quarterbacks in the early signing period in Liu Aumavae (Waldorf, Md./Timpview High (Utah)) and Kyle Crum (Norco, Calif./Norco High), two running backs - Sheldon Canley II (Lompoc, Calif./Lompoc High) and Lucky Sutton (San Diego/Cathedral Catholic High) - one wide receiver - Jacoby Kelly (Compton, Calif./Loyola High) - and one tight end - Logan Tanner (Houston, Texas/St. Pius X High).
On the defensive side of the ball, three of the five are defensive backs, including safeties Eric Butler (Corona, Calif./Centennial High) and Max Garrison (Pasadena, Calif./St. Francis High), and cornerback Chris Johnson (Eastvale, Calif./Eleanor Roosevelt High). San Diego State also signed defensive lineman Ryan Henderson (Las Vegas/Canyon Springs High) and linebacker Trey White (San Diego/Eastlake High).
San Diego State (11-2), which has tied a school record with 11 victories this season and was 24th in the final College Football Playoff Rankings, plays No. 24 (AP) UTSA (12-1) in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 21 in Frisco, Texas.
