SAN DIEGO – San Diego State recorded two victories during the second string of competition Saturday at the SDSU Fall Invitational on the courts of Aztec Tennis Center. The three-day round-robin event consists of men's tennis players from Arizona, UNLV, Loyola Marymount and UC San Diego, along with SDSU.
Sophomore Judson Blair (Salem, Ore.) notched his fourth win of the season in singles action with a thrilling three-set victory over LMU's Jose Dominguez Alonso, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
Previously, fellow classmate Roni Rikkonen (Tampere, Finland) combined with Sahm Irvine of UC San Diego in doubles to defeat the UNLV pairing of Thomas Navarro and Jack Hambrook, 8-6, for his second straight win of the tournament.
The native Finn was unable to replicate his fortune in singles play, however, falling to LMU's John Bryan Otico in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Likewise, junior Alex Scemanenco (Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Calif.) experienced a similar fate in his first action in nearly a month with a 6-3, 6-4 setback to Rana-Roop Bhullar from the same Lions squad.
During the morning doubles round, Scemanenco partnered with Blair but fell short to UNLV's Zac Brodney and Tom Ciszewski by an 8-4 count.
The SDSU Fall Invitational concludes on Sunday when the Aztecs tangle with Arizona in doubles at 9 a.m., followed by singles matches with UNLV. Admission to the event is free.
