COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A school record 55 San Diego State student-athletes were honored by the Mountain West Conference with Scholar-Athlete designation for their achievement in the classroom during the 2019-20 school year.  The announcement came from the league office today. The previous Aztec record was 49 honorees in the 2012-13 school year.

"The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete award program recognizes student-athletes who have achieved academic excellence and a record number of Aztecs who achieved this distinction speaks to the caliber of student-athletes enrolled at San Diego State," said Bobby Smitheran, senior associate athletic director of student-athlete academic support services. "These student-athletes were further challenged with a sudden shift to a virtual classroom and I am extremely proud of their achievement which balanced the demands of their respective sports and academic course load."

Mountain West Scholar-Athlete, one of the highest academic honors the league awards, are given to student-athletes who have completed at least two academic terms at their institution, have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher and have participated in at least one competition during the year in a sport the Mountain West sponsors.

Two programs had double-digit honorees, with swimming and diving leading the way with 11 and track and field with 10. In total, 12 of the 15 sports in which the Aztecs compete in the Mountain West were represented.

Two student-athletes, Daniela Anastasi (women's golf) and McKenna Meyer (women's swimming and diving), earned their fourth Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honor. Five received their third Scholar-Athlete honor and 17 were recognized for the second time.
