SAN DIEGO – 361 San Diego State student-athletes were recently recognized as scholar-athletes. To be an Aztec scholar-athlete, one needs a semester GPA of 3.20 or higher, or have maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The 361 scholar-athletes was one off the school record of 362 set last year.

Malachi Flynn (men's basketball) and McKenna Meyer (swim and dive) were named the Student-Athletes of the Year. This award, presented by athletics director John David Wicker and executive associate athletics director Jenny Bramer, is given annually to the all-around female and male student-athletes who excel in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. These individuals must have a minimum of 3.2 cumulative GPA, have completed at least 72 credits and be an outstanding citizen and leader.

17 student-athletes received the Malik Award, which goes to those who achieved the highest GPA in the fall and/or spring semester. Four student-athletes earned the Malik Award for both the spring and fall semester: Brooke Boron (rowing), Serena Hodson (volleyball),  Lauren Lee (volleyball), Abigail Reeder (women's soccer) and Danielle Stancikas (rowing).

The other Spring 2019 Malik Award winners include: Madeline Bernard (rowing), Michelle Jacob (rowing), Emily Reed (swim and dive) and Jin Zihao (men's golf).

Josh Bringuel (football), Laura Keane (rowing), Madison Lunde (rowing), Carlene Masar (XC/Track and field), Alicia Melosch (women's tennis), Katelyn Murphy (lacrosse), Natalie Regalado (XC/Track and field), Kyler Sloan (rowing) and Alma Thormalm (swim and dive) earned the Malik Award for the Fall 2019 semester.

Men's Tennis and women's golf had the highest team GPA in both semesters. The women's golf team has now claimed the award for five straight semesters while the men's tennis team has had the top team GPA among SDSU men's team for three straight semesters.

Lastly, the Dr. Jim Kitchen Distinguished Service Award went to Dr. Sandra Cook, the Associate Vice President Emeritus of Enrollment Services. This award is presented to an SDSU faculty or staff member who exemplifies extraordinary dedication and service in enhancing the student-athlete experience.
