SAN DIEGO -
Head coach Rocky Long
On today's scrimmage:
"I thought we were a very average looking football team. We made a couple big plays on offense and made a couple big plays on defense and the rest of the scrimmage was sloppy. I thought we were not very intense. I didn't think we played very hard. I didn't think it was very aggressive. I was very disappointed."
On what he was looking for in the scrimmage:
"I wanted them to play hard and look aggressive and be physical and I didn't see any of that. All we did was make a couple big plays on offense and a couple big plays on defense. That's all we did. We didn't look like a good football team, not even close."
Offensive coordinator Bob Toledo
On the offense today:
"First of all, the thing you take is you got a lot of players playing and it's hard to get any continuity or consistency when you're dealing with that many players. We got five quarterbacks and a lot of different people going in. But I thought we made some big plays early. Then we made a lot of mistakes like the fumbled snaps, that's the thing that hurt us. Obviously, we threw some interceptions on poorly thrown balls. So I think we've got potential, we've got ability, we just got to start honing it down and getting ready to play a game now."
On how the players are buying into his system:
"I think they like how we're doing it. In this system, everyone gets a chance to get the ball. I think you saw that we spread it around pretty good. Tight ends, wide receivers, running backs, they all get the ball. We can run it, we can pass it and we can throw screens. We've got a lot of different things that we do. It's just a matter of right now, we've got to get to the point where we put the players in there, they're going to be playing the game and they become more familiar with each other so that now we can become more efficient running and throwing."
Senior wide receiver Colin Lockett
On his first touchdown catch:
"Coach Toledo dialed up a couple plays and we made it happen out here. He told us what the first play of the game was and we all got excited. Dingwell put the ball right there, we practiced that play just two days ago. It was a perfect ball, the coverage was right and I ran up under it successful."
On what the offense showed today:
"We showed we have the ability to score in different ways. Even though (Adam) Muema wasn't playing, you saw De'Saan (Hardwick), even D.J. Pumphrey, Dwayne (Garrett), we're all pretty round. We have a lot of guys that are able to make plays whenever their number is called. When you have that as an offense, it makes things a lot easier. And then the offensive line, pass blocking and of course after that you have guys opening up holes wide for Chase Price to run it in from 10 yards. So it's a pretty well-rounded offense right now, we believe in the system."
Junior quarterback Adam Dingwell
On how he did personally today:
"I think I did alright, I made a couple mistakes. When we get down in the red zone, we need to put the ball in the end zone. Clock management is another thing, we got to get the play into the huddle and I got to call the play faster. That's one thing that will show up on the film and I'm sure there are other things. I'll take a look tomorrow and see what I need to fix."
On having more shotgun plays and three and four wide receiver sets this year:
"It's all up to coach Toledo. We'll game plan each week and we'll try to put the defense in a position where they're uncomfortable and have to change what they want to do to what we're going to do. So if we're going to run the ball, we'll do that. And if we need to throw the ball, I think we showed today that we can do that and be successful."
Senior defensive back Nat Berhe
On today's defensive performance:
"We did some things well and the things we did bad in, it really showed. I know 3rd down and 15, we can't give up bombs to Colin (Lockett). He made some great catches today. My hat goes off to him. Our corners have to play a lot better if we expect to be a really good defense."
On what the defense needs to work on:
"Maintaining intensity. I think we came out a little flat today. We just can't think we're good we have to play good. A lot of guys got complacent and it showed. The corners have been practicing well throughout camp and I was a little surprised and a little disappointed with the performance today from them and our whole secondary. We have to go back to the drawing board and really figure out what's going on."
