SDSU-Point Loma Nazarene Postgame Quotes in PDF Format
San Diego State Head Coach Steve Fisher
Opening Statement:
"I thought we played hard. We have to do a better job of maintaining that defensive effort when we get tired. When we got a little tired we tried for a quick fix and it led to easy baskets rather than staying solid with our defense. We can't have nine assists and ten turnovers. We have to have 15 assists and five turnovers. There were enough good signs to say we're making progress. There were enough teaching points to say we have a lot to do. The good news is that we'll do it and we'll get better. We've got a good team, and we're going to have a better team."
On his analysis of zone tonight:
"We need a lot more work on it. We're going to try it in a game that counts. I think it will be a bit of a rhythm changer so we'll do it selectively. We did it one segment against (Cal State) San Marcos, one segment tonight. I thought we were better in terms of concepts of what we wanted to do tonight. We have to make sure that we don't give up wide open looks and don't give up second chances. It's something that will be there, how much we use it remains to be seen."
San Diego State Junior Guard James Rahon
On his hot shooting tonight:
"In the beginning I felt good. I've been getting a lot of extra shots up and it's been carrying over to the last couple of games. I'm just trying to get better each and every game."
San Diego State Senior Forward Tim Shelton
On SDSU's zone defense tonight:
"I thought our zone play was a lot better than the last (game). We put a couple of wrinkles in it last week just to modify it a little bit - looking at the film and adjusting some things. I think it's going to be effective for us later on, but we're still developing it."
On how the team is coming along compared to where it was when practice first started:
"I think our team camaraderie is coming along pretty quickly. I like that. I really like our guard play and I like the development of our bigs as well....We're all excited and happy about our progress."
San Diego State Junior Guard Chase Tapley
On SDSU's zone defense tonight:
"(Assistant) coach Tony (Bland) really made an emphasis on guarding the yard. It's a weak area for us, but coming in every day practicing guarding the yard and keeping the guy in front of you is really paying off. The quote that is on the board is, `Play hard to start the game.' If you play hard with 100 percent effort, you can make up for mistakes that you make."
Point Loma Nazarene Head Coach Bill Carr
On Point Loma Nazarene's play tonight:
"I thought at times we executed okay. We got the ball to the right people, but obviously not enough times to beat a team like (San Diego State). I like this group and I think we have a good chance to compete at our level."
On San Diego State:
"They're so long and athletic. With (Chase) Tapley and (James) Rahon scoring on the wings, they're hard to guard. They use the ball screens well and they can pass the ball. They're a good team. Defensively, they'll get after you and it got under our guys' skin a little bit."
On playing in an environment like Viejas Arena:
"Any time you come here is good and it's fun. It's fun for me and it's fun for the kids. It's just a great college basketball environment. That's why I wanted to bring our guys over here, because we don't see this any time at our level. It was a good experience for them."
