SAN DIEGO -
San Diego State successfully wrapped up its exhibition slate with a 78-53 victory over Point Loma Nazarene Monday night at Viejas Arena. The game was played in front 11,613 fans, the second-largest exhibition crowd in the Steve Fisher era.
For the second straight outing, the Aztecs were led by James Rahon, who scored a game-high 18 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting. The junior connected on his first five shots of the evening before missing a three with 6:27 left in the first half.
Joining Rahon in double figures was Tim Shelton, Chase Tapley and Alec Williams, who each scored 11 points. Garrett Green led all players with eight rebounds, while Shelton and DeShawn Stephens each collected seven.
SDSU took an early 1-0 lead on a Shelton free throw and never looked back. The Sea Lions tied the game twice in the first 5 minutes, 51 seconds, but after the score was knotted at 13-all, San Diego State went on a 9-0 run to blow the game open. The Aztec lead eventually swelled 21 points before the home side entered the locker room with a 42-26 lead.
San Diego State opened the second half by outscoring PLNU, 12-3, and the Aztec lead grew to 25 points. The Sea Lions would get no closer than 20 points the rest of the way as SDSU went on to record the 25-point victory.
The win marks the Aztecs' 18th consecutive exhibition decision and the seventh straight by a double-figure margin.
San Diego State officially opens the 2011-12 campaign on Friday when it plays host to Bryant at 7:30 p.m. PT inside Viejas Arena. Prior to the contest, SDSU will honor the 2010-11 squad by unveiling its 2011 Mountain West Conference regular-season and tournament championship banners and a third banner recognizing the Aztecs' NCAA Sweet 16 appearance.
There are less than 1,000 tickets remaining for the game vs. Bryant, the Saturday date vs. Southern Utah and Sunday's tilt vs. UC Davis. Fans can purchase tickets for all three games by logging on to GoAztecs.com, visiting Qualcomm Stadium Window E, or by calling 619-283-SDSU.
