TitleGraduate Assistant
Ali Tavakol
Ali Tavakol, the San Diego State men’s basketball head student manager for the past three years, was named the program’s graduate assistant for the 2022-23 season in May 2022.

Tavakol has been with the program for his entire college career, and prior to the 2019-20 season, was named the Head Student Manager and held that position until his graduation in May. In that position, he led up to 10 student managers per year and his responsibilities to them included keeping them informed on the latest tasks, assigning individual roles throughout practice, teaching his staff to use the film and scoreboard equipment, and managing various other day-to-day tasks of the group.

His responsibilities to the team included working with players on a daily basis before, during and after practice to improve their skills. He led his staff in setting up everything the team needed for each practice, including making sure the correct equipment was readily available to be used by the coaches and players. In addition, he participated in drills when needed, recorded and distributed film of practices to coaches and staff, and helped players and staff throughout road trips in whatever issues arose.

He joined the program in his freshman year (2018-19) as a student manager. He was involved in all aspects of the team’s daily preparations, both before, during and after the season.

During the summer of 2019, Tavakol interned with IMPACT Basketball in Las Vegas, which is one of the top professional basketball training programs in the country. Assisting IMPACT founder Joe Abunassar, he worked with NBA players like Demarcous Cousins, Kyle Lowry, Kristaps Porzingis, Julius Randle, and Harrison Barnes.

Tavakol graduated from San Diego State in May 2022 with a degree in business administration with an emphasis in entrepreneurship and is enrolled in an MBA program at SDSU.
