At San Diego State:
  • Osia Lewis enters his fifth season as San Diego State's defensiveline coach and his 10th season working with Rocky Long.
  • He brings extensive experience to the position, having served asa defensive coordinator at both the professional and collegiate levels.
  • Has coached in the Mountain West, Conference USA, Big Tenand Pac-10, and has been on the sidelines in 10 bowl games.
  • Under his guidance, San Diego State has placed a defensivelineman on the all-conference team three times in the last four seasons- Jerome Long (second team), Sam Meredith (honorable mention)and Alex Barrett (honorable mention).
  • San Diego State produced one of the best defensive efforts inschool history in 2014, finishing in the top 20 nationally in nearlyevery defensive category, including scoring defense (13th) and totaldefense (16th).
  • In 2012, helped SDSU improve by nearly 30 places nationally intotal defense, as the Aztecs vaulted from the 68th position in 2011to the 39th spot.
  • With Lewis' assistance, SDSU also led the conference in rushingdefense during the 2012 campaign, allowing 133.5 yards per game.In addition, he coached defensive tackle Sam Meredith to honorablemention all-MW recognition. Meredith led all Aztec defensivelinemen that season with 36 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, one fumblerecovery and a pass breakup.
  • In his first year on The Mesa, he tutored defensive tackle JeromeLong, who was a second-team all-league choice and was selectedby the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2012 NFL Draft. As a team, SDSUfinished first in the MW in sacks and tackles for loss, and limitedfour opponents to less than 100 yards on the ground in 2011.
Previous Experience:
  • Previously worked alongside Aztec head coach Rocky Long atNew Mexico from 2003-07 as the Lobos' defensive coordinator. Healso tutored the defensive line (2003-05) and linebackers (2006-07) during that same time span.
  • In his tenure, UNM went to four bowl games and its defensiveunit was fifth in the country in rushing defense in 2003 and first inthe MW in total defense in 2003 and 2004.
  • Was in charge of the Lobo defense that included NFL Draft picksQuincy Black, Glover Quin and DeAndre Wright. Additionally, defensiveback Brandon Payne was named a Walter Camp Second-Team All-American in 2004 when he led the nation in passesdefended with 23.
  • The Tucson, Ariz., native left Albuquerque to take a similar positionas defensive coordinator at UTEP from 2008-09. He then hada one-year stint in the United Football League with the HartfordColonials before coming to San Diego State.
  • Was an assistant coach in the Big Ten at Illinois from 1997-02,guiding the linebackers and defensive line. The Illini played in the2002 Nokia Sugar Bowl, the school's first-ever appearance in aBowl Championship Series game and posted a final No. 12 nationalranking.
  • His first full-time NCAA Division I coaching position was at hisalma mater, Oregon State. He was an assistant coach with linebackersand special teams from 1991-96, working for the first fiveseasons with Long, who was the Beavers' defensive coordinator.
  • Started his career as an assistant coach at Western Oregon from1989-90.

Playing Experience:

  • Was an honorable mention All-American and team captain at OregonState from 1982-85. As a senior, he was an all-conference selectionand was the Beavers' most inspirational player.
  • Continued his playing career in the professional ranks in the CFLwith the Toronto Argonauts and in the AFL with the Chicago Bruisersand New York Firebirds. Lewis earned all-arena league honors in1988 and played in the Arena Bowl.

Education:

  • Earned his bachelor's degree in social science education fromOregon State in 1986, and also has a master's degree in educationfrom the school (1989).

  • Lewis and his wife, Darlene, have one son, Marvin, and onedaughter, Kiana.
