PULLMAN, Wash. – The San Diego State women’s soccer team (8-3-3, 2-1-2 Pac-12) played Washington State (5-5-4, 2-2-1 Pac-12) to a 1-1 draw on Thursday afternoon.
San Diego State opened on the attack with Alexis Leath putting the first shot on target 63 seconds into the match, but Ashlyn Dvorak deflected it away for a corner kick. Dvorak made a diving save on a Katie Senn shot in the fifth minute. Kailey Carlen made her first save of the day on a shot by Calli Holje in the 15th minute. Carlen reached up to catch a shot by Reagan Brisendine in the 31st.
Katie Senn had the first shot on target of the second half 88 seconds after the beginning of the half. It, too, was saved. Victoria Miller had a nice opportunity in the 52nd minute but it was deflected away by a Cougar. In the 56th minute, replay review showed that the ball deflected off Lily Boudet’s hand in the box, setting up a penalty kick for Washington State. Lexi Lee took the shot and converted, giving WSU a 1-0 lead. Leath tried to tie up the match 11 minutes later, but Dvorak reached down and made the stop. The officials handed the Cougar keeper the first yellow card of the match in the 74th minute.
In the 84th minute, it appeared that Mia Hambro Svendsen had tied the match with a header. However, the offsides flag was up. After replay review, the referees determined that Dvorak fouled Charlie Gerson in the box on the play, setting up a penalty kick for Victoria Miller. She converted into the bottom left corner of the net to tie the match at one. In the 85th minute, Kenny Moore took a long shot that Dvorak caught off a bounce for the save. A minute later, Carlen made a leaping deflection on a shot by Delaney Hawkins to prevent the Cougars from pulling back ahead. Shortly afterwards, Leath had a breakaway, but a running save by Dvorak kept the match tied. Neither team was able to put another shot on target and the match finished in a 1-1 draw.
The Aztecs finished the match with more shots (18-17) and shots on goal (7-4). The Cougars had more saves (6-3) and fouls (9-7) while each team tallied five corner kicks.
