SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team (5-2-1) is concluding its non-conference slate with a home match against the Northern Colorado Bears (3-3-2) on Sunday at noon PT. The match will be broadcast on the Pac-12 YouTube page.
Last week, the Aztecs played on Saturday night at Utah Valley. Katie Senn gave SDSU a 1-0 lead at the 58-minute mark with assists by freshmen Kana Smith and Alannah Gonzales. After Utah Valley tied the score at one in the 84th minute, the Aztecs fought to go back up. With 22 seconds remaining in the match, Lily Boudet connected Cayden Chowana-Bandhu on a long pass. The freshman fired into the back of the net for her first career goal and the match winner. The score was the first game-winning goal in the final minute of a match by an Aztec since Denise Castro scored on a header with 28 seconds remaining to win 2-1 at Nebraska on August 18, 2022. On Thursday night, SDSU triumphed over Pepperdine by a 2-0 score. Victoria Miller put the Aztecs on top in the ninth minute with assists from Alexyz Nakamoto and Chowana-Bandhu, who took seven shots in the match, as many as Pepperdine’s entire team. Five of the freshman’s shots were on goal including her score in the 51st minute with assists from Alexis Leath and Miller. Kailey Carlen logged the tenth solo shutout of her career, saving both Pepperdine shots on target. Chowana-Bandhu became the first Aztec true freshman to score in consecutive wins since Rachelle Elve did so in three straight in 2019.
The Scarlet and Black are playing Northern Colorado for the first time but hold a 16-1-1 all-time record against current members of the Big Sky Conference including a 1-0 win over Portland State on August 23 this season. The only defeat came by a 1-0 score against Montana back in 1996. The draw came in 2024 against Weber State. The Aztecs’ most goals against the Big Sky came in a 7-2 victory over Idaho on August 21, 2022.
The Bears and Aztecs have not played any of the same teams yet but will later this year. UNC beat Colorado State 2-1 on August 23 and will play at Boise State on September 25. The Aztecs host the Broncos in the Pac-12 opener on October 1 and the Rams on October 11. Northern Colorado will host Portland State on October 22, who the Aztecs defeated 1-0 on August 23.
SDSU opens conference play in its first season in the Pac-12 at home against Boise State on October 1 at 7 p.m. All Aztecs home matches on the SDSU Sports Deck are free to attend and are streamed for free on the Pac-12 YouTube channel.
