RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- Freshman Brayden Forte (Aurora, Colo.) fired rounds of 70 and 68, and is tied for first place at 4-under-par-138 to lead the San Diego State men’s golf team on the first day of the Vuori Invitational on Monday in nearby Rancho Santa Fe, California.
Forte is tied with Oregon’s Sebastian Desoisa out of 72 golfers with 15 players yet to finish their second round because of darkness on the par-71, 7,003-yard Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club .
Competing in his second career collegiate tournament, Forte shot a 1-under 70 with four birdies and three bogeys in the morning. Starting on the 10th hole once again in the afternoon, Forte carded a 3-under 68, highlighted by three consecutive birdies before bogeying the par-4, 367-yard ninth. He had five birdies and two bogeys overall on the afternoon.
Forte and Desoisa lead Thomas Curry (Arkansas) by two strokes, while Brigham Young’s Kihei Akina, Arkansas’ Gerado Gomez and Long Beach State’s Bruce Macdonald are also under par at -1.
Competing as an individual, senior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif.) opened with a 71 and only has three holes recorded for his second round, where he was at even par, currently tied for night.
Junior All-American Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is tied for 16th with two holes still to play on Tuesday morning before his final round begins. He opened with a 2-over 73 and was +1 through 16 holes in the second round.
Sophomore Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) is tied for 33rd at 5-over 147 after rounds of 72 and 75.
Junior Lequan Wang (San Mateo, Calif./UC Davis) shot rounds of 73 and 78, and is at +9, while sophomore Eli Geddy (Tustin, Calif.) is also at +9 with two holes still to play tomorrow morning following his 76 in the first round.
Junior Luke Bailey (Encinitas, Calif.) made his Aztec debut with a 77 and 78, and is tied for 63rd at +13.
SDSU is seventh out of 12 teams at +13, and joins fifth-place Pacific (+11) and Long Beach State (+17) as the programs who have yet to finish their second round. No. 10 Arkansas leads at even-par, while Colorado (+4), Oregon (+7) and No. 23 Brigham Young (+9) are also within nine shots of the lead.
