SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team (3-1) coasted to a 7-0 win against Pacific (0-3) on Thursday night on the SDSU Sports Deck.
Katie Senn got the Aztecs on the board at 12:44 with her first goal of the season. She was assisted by Alexyz Nakamoto and Alexis Leath. Midway through the 17th minute, Senn tried for her second goal, but it was saved by Ava Wells. Eight minutes later, Naima Castro doubled the lead with an assist from another transfer, Kenny Moore. Senn got her brace two minutes afterwards to make it 3-0 with assists from Nakamoto and Leath once again.
Pacific’s Yohonna Bell was given a yellow card in the 37th minute. Nora Cullen also received one in the 45th minute. The Aztecs threatened twice more in the final minute of the first half but shots by both Cayden Chowana-Bandhu and Kenny Moore were saved.
Just 1:04 into the second half, Kailey Carlen made a diving save, which would be her only one of the night. Chowana-Bandhu had another shot on goal saved at the 51-minute mark. Nearly six minutes later, Chowana-Bandhu found Rory Schank for the first goal of the second half. 88 seconds afterwards, Schank made another good shot attempt, but it was saved. Janelli Villagran was issued the Tigers’ third yellow card of the night at 61:37.
At 76:07, Carlen left goal for the first time as an Aztec as Sammy Martinez entered and played the remainder of the match. In the waning seconds of the 79th minute, Victoria Miller got one past Wells to make it 5-0. With the Aztecs leading by five goals in the final 15 minutes of the match, the teams played with a running clock for the rest of the night. Martinez made her first save, on a shot by Bell, at 87:11.
Alexis Leath scored a goal of her own with 1:54 remaining in the match to extend the lead to six. Mia DeJohn took a free kick and got the ball to Maya Stinson, who scored with 11 seconds left on the clock. Time expired before the game restarted, ending a 7-0 win for San Diego State.
The Aztecs finished the match with more shots (19-7) and shots on goal (12-2). The Tigers had more fouls (12-6) and saves (5-2). Each team had two corner kicks and SDSU possessed the ball for longer (64%-36%).
THE NOTE I
San Diego State’s 7-0 win matched the largest margin of victory in program history against a Division I opponent, a feat previously accomplished in a 7-0 win over Air Force on October 17, 2008. The Aztecs have won by more goals on two occasions, beating then-NAIA member California Baptist 8-0 on October 6, 1992, and winning 10-0 at Division III La Verne in the third match in SDSU history on September 25, 1989.
THE NOTE II
Katie Senn’s two goals in the match tied her career total entering the night. Senn scored her first two collegiate goals in consecutive matches last season at Pepperdine on September 11 and against UC Riverside on September 14.
THE NOTE III
A number of Aztecs achieved milestones in the win. Rory Schank scored the first goal of her collegiate career. Naima Castro and Maya Stinson each scored for the first time in Scarlet and Black. Cayden Chowana-Bandhu and Mia DeJohn recorded their first collegiate assists. Kenny Moore picked up an assist for the first time at SDSU. Sammy Martinez made her first Division I save. Martinez, Alexandra Myrestam and Stinson each played their first minutes this season with Martinez and Stinson also making their Aztec debuts in the match.
