SAN RAMON, Calif. – The Pac-12 announced the conference’s preseason poll on Tuesday morning. The league’s nine head coaches voted on the poll, picking San Diego State to finish fourth. SDSU also had a trio of players named to the conference’s Preseason Impact List.
San Diego State has been predicted to finish outside the top two for just the third time in the last 17 years. The Aztecs were picked fourth in 2019. That season, SDSU went 8-2-0 in Mountain West play for a share of the regular season title and advanced to the championship match of the league tournament. Last season, SDSU was picked fourth in the Mountain West as well, eventually drawing with top-seeded host Boise State in the MW tournament semifinals, but the Broncos advanced in penalty kicks.
Utah State, the reigning Mountain West Tournament champions, have been picked to finish first. Texas State was picked in second place and won the Sun Belt Tournament a year ago. They are followed by Boise State, the winners of the Mountain West regular season title last year. Following San Diego State in fourth place is Washington State, then Colorado State and Gonzaga are tied for sixth while Fresno State was picked eighth and Oregon State comes in at ninth.
Fifth year midfielder Katie Senn, who was second in the Mountain West with eight assists last year and started all 20 matches, scoring two goals, is one of three Aztecs selected to the Pac-12 Impact List. She is joined by junior defender Lily Boudet, who started 17 matches last season and appeared in all 20. Boudet had her first two career goals and assists last season. Returning sophomore keeper Kailey Carlen rounds out the Aztecs on the list and is coming off a seven-shutout season, tied for the tenth most in one year in program history.
San Diego State will open the regular season tomorrow night at 7 p.m. with a road match at UC San Diego, which will be broadcast on ESPN+ to paid subscribers. Admission is free for all matches held on the Sports Deck and all home matches will be broadcast on the Pac-12 YouTube page.
