MARANA, Ariz. -- Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) finished in 13th place as the season ended for the San Diego State men’s golf team at the NCAA Marana Regional Wednesday in Marana, Arizona. Takis carded a 3-under-par 69 on the par-72, 7,317-yard The Gallery Golf Club to finish 13th out of 78 golfers at 8-under.
The Aztecs, who were 41st in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, came in 11th out of 14 teams at 5-over 869. SDSU bettered its score in each of the three rounds, shooting an 11-over 299 on Monday, a 1-over 289 on Tuesday and a 7-under 281 in today’s final round. The top-5 from the NCAA Marana Regional - No. 18 Arizona (-49), No. 5 Oklahoma State (-35), No. 8 LSU (-30), No. 29 Duke (-24) and No. 44 Arkansas State (-24) - advanced to the NCAA Championship, May 29-June 3, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in nearby Carlsbad, California.
Takis, who entered as the fourth-ranked individual in the computer rankings, completed his impressive season in 13th. Takis, the Mountain West Golfer of the Year, was at 2-under at the turn with three birdies and a bogey but opened the back nine with a double bogey on the par-4, 461-yard 10th. He bounced back with a birdie on the par-5, 558-yard 11th, and consecutive birdies on the par-5, 550-yard 16th and the par-4, 336-yard 17th, before recording a par on the par-4, 435-yard 18th.
Alabama’s William Jennings advanced to the NCAA Championship as an individual at 15-under 201 and was joined atop the leaderboard by team qualifiers Zach Pollo and Filip Jakubcik of Arizona, and Eric Lee of Oklahoma State. Tarleton State’s Alvaro Paster finished fifth at -12.
Takis finished his season with a 69.23 scoring average, more than a stroke better than Shea Lague’s previous school record set in 2022-23. His career 70.29 scoring average is also tops in SDSU recorded history. Today’s 69 was the 17th round in the 60s out of 30 rounds for Takis this season.
Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy), meanwhile, bounced back from a 4-over 76 on Tuesday with a 3-under 69 today to tie for 31st for the tournament at -1. Kowack birdied four of his first six holes and two of his final three. The three-time all-MW performer also had three bogeys in the middle nine holes. Kowack finished his career with a 71.96 scoring average, tied with Aaron Goldberg (2004-08) for the seventh-lowest mark in program history.
Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) and junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) each tied for 58th at +8 following a 72 and 73, respectively. Hirayama overcame a rough start where he opened with consecutive bogeys and then triple bogeyed the par-4, 434-yard fifth. He sank six birdies over his final 13 holes with one bogey, finishing at even-par for the day.
Sampson made the turn at 3-over but rebounded with a 2-under 34 on the back nine with three birdies and one bogey.
Redshirt junior Dylan Oyama’s (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS), who shot an 82 on Monday and was subbed out of the lineup for yesterday’s second round, carded a 1-under 71 today, highlighted by an eagle on the 16th. He also had a pair of birdies and three bogeys.
San Diego State finished its 27-year stay in the Mountain West with seven league championships, including a league-tying record of four straight from 2022-25. SDSU joins the Pac-12 Conference on July 1.
