FRESNO, Calif. – The San Diego State softball team (23-25, 8-15 Mountain West) dropped its game at Fresno State (22-22, 11-12 MW) by an 8-2 score on Thursday evening.
Senior Lala Macario led off the game with a single and advanced on a wild pitch and a fly ball but was stranded on third base. The Bulldogs pulled ahead in the bottom of the frame. Alyssa Rebolledo walked and Jamie Hicks singled before Mallory Vancleave added a single of her own. Rebolledo crossed the plate on an error on the play. The next hitter, Alyssa Ramirez, homered to center field to make it 4-0 Bulldogs. After another single by Rylee Bocchini, Key-annah Pu’a got Olivia Hill to hit into an inning-ending double play on a line drive to third base.
Gabriella Terrones reached base with two outs in the second inning when she was hit by a pitch. Ava Schaffel pitched in the bottom of the frame and finished a scoreless inning with a strikeout.
The Aztecs got on the scoreboard in the third inning. Macario bunted for another single and advanced on a throwing error by the pitcher, Lauryn Carranco. When Jade Ignacio walked, the fourth ball was wild and Macario raced to third base. Angie Yellen followed with a squeeze bunt and Macario came home on the play. Fresno State responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning when Jamie Hicks led off with a double and advanced on a flyout before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ramirez.
In the fourth, the bottom of the Aztecs’ order scraped across another run. Terrones reached on a single before scoring all the way from first base on a double down the left field line by Ally Dueker. Fresno State responded. Olivia Hill led off with a single and Jayda Crosby followed her with a two-run home run to make it 7-2 Bulldogs. Schaffel retired the next three hitters to end the inning.
Angie Yellen singled for the Aztecs in the top of the fifth. Hicks led off with a single for the Bulldogs and scored on a double by Vancleave, who advanced to third based on the throw. Schaffel limited the damage with three straight outs to strand Vancleave at third.
Following a leadoff walk in the bottom of the sixth, Faith Jordan induced a trio of consecutive outs to end the inning.
Jazmin Williams appeared to beat out an infield single to open the seventh inning, but after a Fresno State challenge, she was ruled out. Macario followed with a single, her third hit of the ball game. Then, Kaila Pollard hit an infield single but back-to-back fly outs ended the game in favor of Fresno State by an 8-2 score.
THE NOTE
Gabriella Terrones was hit by a pitch for the ninth time this season, moving into sole possession of third in the program record book. She trails just Shelby Thompson (2021) and Sydnee Cable (2014), who were each hit 14 times.

San Diego State and Fresno State have two more games in this series. They are scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday and 1 p.m. on Saturday and both games will be streamed on Mountain West Network.
