SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State baseball team earned two Mountain West weekly honors on Monday, as Tyce Peterson (Kirkland, Wash.) was named MW Player of the Week, while Max Farrell (Carlsbad, Calif.) was tabbed the league’s Freshman of the Week. The announcement was made by the conference office in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Both players were key contributors in the Aztecs’ 3-1 week (March 30-April 4), highlighted by SDSU’s first three-game sweep of Air Force since 2021 and its first in San Diego since 2015, which vaulted the Scarlet and Black into sole possession of first place in the Mountain West standings.

With his award, Peterson garnered his first career MW weekly accolade, while Farrell collected his second top freshman certificate from the conference, giving the Aztecs seven weekly honorees this season.

A transfer from Oregon State, Peterson led SDSU with a 1.526 OPS and a 1.000 slugging percentage for the week while batting .400 with three homers and five RBIs. The Aztec third baseman hit safely in all four contests and went 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.

Peterson became the first SDSU player to hit two home runs in a game this season when he belted two solo shots in a tough 6-2 defeat at No. 22/25 Arizona State to account for the Aztecs’ two scores.

In the series opener against Air Force, Peterson belted his team-leading eighth home run, a two-run bomb in the third inning that put the Scarlet and Black in front for good, as the Aztecs rolled to a 9-2 win. He also tied for the team lead with multiple hits in 14 games this season after going 2-for-5 with a stolen base in SDSU’s 11-2 triumph in the second contest of the series.

Peterson then gave the Aztecs some added insurance in their 12-9 victory in the series finale with an RBI single in the seventh inning that closed out the scoring.

As of April 6, Peterson finds himself among the Mountain West leaders in several categories, including home runs (2nd, 8), doubles (3rd, 13), hits (T-3rd, 43), slugging percentage (4th, .641) and OPS (5th, 1.061). Additionally, Kirkland, Washington, native is currently slotted second on the team with a .336 batting average and 26 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Farrell hit .333 in four games last week, featuring a .429 clip with a .786 slugging percentage and a team-best seven RBIs during the Air Force series. The SDSU first baseman also topped the squad with three stolen bases in that span and tied for the top spot with six hits.

In the series opener against the Falcons, Farrell went 2-for-5 with an RBI, laying down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt for a single during a four-run outburst in the third inning that put the Scarlet and Black in front for good at 5-2.

In game two, the San Marcos High School alumnus tied his career high with three hits and scored three runs, highlighted by his third homer of the season, a three-run blast in the third inning that gave the Aztecs an insurmountable 7-0 lead.

In game three, Farrell closed out the week in style, providing a key three-run triple with two outs in the sixth that punctuated a big six-run explosion, as SDSU took the lead for good at 10-7.

For the season, Farrell is batting .275 with three homers, three triples, four doubles, 22 RBIs, 29 runs and 10 stolen bases. His three triples are tied for third in the MW, while his 10 steals are slotted fourth behind teammate Adam Magpoc (12), who shares the second spot.

San Diego State returns to the diamond on Tuesday, April 7, when it welcomes UC Riverside to Tony Gwynn Stadium for a midweek game, starting at 6 p.m. PT.
