SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- San Diego State sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) shot a 2-under-par 68 to finish in a tie for third for the San Diego State men’s golf team on the final day of the 79th Western Intercollegiate Wednesday in Santa Cruz, California.
Takis, who is the No. 4-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer ratings, tied with Arizona’s Taishi Moto for third out of 96 golfers at 9-under 201 on the historic par-70, 6,486-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. The 54-hole total of 201 was a collegiate low for Takis, who now has one victory, two runner-up finishes and four top-5 efforts in his eight tournaments this season. Only USC’s Jack Buchanon (-10) and Stanford’s Dean Greyserman (-10) bested Takis in the tournament.
Takis bogeyed the tough par-3, 210-yard third hole for a third straight day but rallied with four birdies on the front nine to make the turn with a 32. He bogeyed the par-4, 390-yard 11th and the par-3, 142-yard 15th, before birdieing the par-4, 370-yard 17th and signing for a 68. Half (12) of the 24 tournaments Takis has competed in this season have been in the 60s, while 14 are below par.
Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy), meanwhile, shot a 1-over 71 and finished in a tie for 46th at 5-over 215. Kowack sank two birdies, which were offset by three bogeys.
Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) carded a 2-under 68, vaulting up 19 places into a tie for 59th. After a 79 on Monday and a 71 yesterday, Chokprajakchat eagled the par-5, 532-yard 13th, and had three birdies and three bogeys.
Freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) matched Chokprajakchat with a 68 in today’s final round to finish in a tie for 71st at +12. Sahr had five birdies and three bogeys on the day.
Junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) shot his second straight 74, placing in a tie for 73rd at 13-over 223. Oyama eagled the 13th and had two birdies but also had six bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 396-yard 16th.
Junior Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) was unable to record a birdie in today’s final round en route to an 84. He was 90th overall at +22.
The No. 35 Aztecs, who won this event last year for the first time since 1960, had their best round of the week with a 1-under 349, remaining in 12th in the 15-team field at +23. SDSU bested No. 39 Washington (+49), Hawai‘i (+72) and UC Irvine (+82). No. 30 USC captured the team title at -13, edging California (-12) by a stroke.
The Aztecs will look for their unprecedented fifth consecutive Mountain West championship, set for May 3-5 at Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona.
