SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- San Diego State sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) carded a 4-under-par 66 and is in third place after two rounds of the 79th Western Intercollegiate Tuesday in Santa Cruz, California. Takis is at 7-under through 36 holes on the historic par-70, 6,486-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club.

Takis, who is the No. 4-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer ratings, only trails USC’s Jack Buchanon (-11) and Jaden Dumdumaya (-8) in the 96-man field through two rounds. Takis had the same exact 34 on the front nine as yesterday’s first round with a bogey on the par-3, 220-yard third hole, and birdies on the par-5, 567-yard sixth and the par-5, 492-yard ninth holes. He rallied off four birdies over the first eight holes on the back nine, including the par-4, 371-yard 12th, the par-5, 532-yard 13th, the par-3, 127-yard 15th and the par-4, 372-yard 17th to reach 5-under for the round and 8-under for the tournament. However, Takis bogeyed the par-3, 173-yard 18th to sign for a 66.

Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) shot an even-par 70 and is tied for 49th at 4-over 144. Kowack birdied the first two holes and the last two holes of the front nine, and made the turn at 33. He birdied No. 12 on the back nine with three bogeys to card a 70.

Junior Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) had a 3-over 73 and is tied for 67th at +8. Kench, competing in the Aztec starting five for the second time this season, had three birdies and six bogeys on the day.

Junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) carded a 74 in today’s second round and is at +9, which is tied for 71st. Oyama started his round with 10 consecutive pars before bogeying the par-4, 390-yard 11th, double-bogeying the par-4, 392-yard 16th and bogeying 18 for his 74.

Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) rebounded from his 79 on Monday with a 1-over 71 today. Tied for 78th at +10, Chokprajakchat was 3-over through eight holes but went 2-under over the final 10 holes. For the day, he logged five birdies and six bogeys.

Freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) bettered his 10-over 80 on Monday by six strokes with a 74 today and is tied for 89th at +14. Sahr was even-par through 10 holes with two birdies and two bogeys, but had two three two bogeys and a double-bogey on the par-5, 392-yard 16th to settle for a 74.

The No. 35 Aztecs, who won this event last year for the first time since 1960, shot a 4-over 354 today, 16 strokes better than Monday. SDSU is 12th out of 15 teams at 24-over 724 heading into tomorrow’s final round. No. 30 USC stormed to the lead at -16 following a 16-under 334 on Tuesday. California is second at -12, while No. 24 Brigham Young, No. 50 UNLV and Chattanooga are all tied for third at -4.

San Diego State’s final round on Wednesday is set to begin at 9:04 a.m. PT.
