SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State softball team (21-20, 6-10 Mountain West) returns home this weekend for a three-game series against the Grand Canyon Lopes (41-4, 14-2 MW) at SDSU Softball Stadium.
The games are scheduled for 6 p.m. PT on Friday, 4 p.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday. Saturday’s game will air on the Mountain West Network.
SDSU is 2-3 against Grand Canyon all-time. The teams met twice in 2024 with the Aztecs winning in the regular season and the Lopes winning in the postseason. In 2023, SDSU blanked GCU 6-0 in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional on its way to an NCAA Salt Lake City Super Regional appearance. The Lopes emerged victorious from the first two meetings, both during the 2019 regular season. Against ten common opponents so far this season, SDSU is 6-10 and Grand Canyon is 19-2.
Last week, on Wednesday, SDSU hosted Nevada for a doubleheader. In the first game, Nevada scored in the first inning, but SDSU loaded the bases, scoring twice in the bottom half to go ahead. The Aztecs also loaded the bases in the second and third innings and added an insurance run. After the Wolf Pack homered twice to tie the game in the sixth, Olivia Gigante doubled to put SDSU back in front. However, Nevada crossed the plate four times in the seventh inning to go ahead and went on to win the game by a 7-4 final score. The Aztecs never led in the second game, ultimately falling by a 13-2 score in five innings. Lala Macario had a big day at the plate, accumulating a 1.833 OPS by going 4-for-5 with a double, three singles, a walk, two RBIs and a run scored. SDSU played a pair of games at San Jose State over the weekend. Olivia Gigante gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of the first game before hitting another go-ahead homer in the seventh to make it 2-1. She became the third Aztec this season with a multi-homer game. SDSU added insurance runs in the inning on an RBI single by Jade Ignacio and a two-run double off the bat of Kaila Pollard and the Aztecs would go on to win by a 6-1 score. In the second game, San Jose State led from the start and earned an 8-0 victory.
