SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane Australia) fired a 3-under-par 67 and is in a six-way tie for fifth place to lead the San Diego State men’s golf team on the first day of the 79th Western Intercollegiate Monday in Santa Cruz, California.

Takis, the fourth-ranked player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clipped computer rankings, made the turn at 1-under but bogeyed the par-4, 437-yard 10th hole on the historic par-70, 6,486-yard Pasatiempo Golf Club. Takis, however, birdied the next three holes and parred out to complete his opening 67.

Takis is tied with UNLV’s Trevor Lewis, Brigham Young’s Kihei Akina, Chattanooga’s Ethan Whitaker, and USC’s Jack Buchanon and Jaden Dumdumaya for fifth out of 96 golfers, one shot behind California’s Trevor Cox (-4) and Stanford’s Dean Greyserman (-4). Arizona’s Taishi Moto and Chattanooga’s Evan Rogers are the co-leaders at -5.

Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) opened with a 74 and is tied for 62nd. He had one birdie and five bogeys on the afternoon.

Juniors Phillip Kench (Del Mar, Calif./La Jolla HS) and Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) are each tied for 69th at +5. Kench, competing in SDSU’s starting lineup for the second time this season, sank a birdie with six bogeys. Oyama also had a birdie, but also two bogeys and two double bogeys.

Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) carded a 79 and is tied for 84th, while freshman Beau Sahr (Eagle, Idaho) is a shot back in a tie for 88th at +10.

The No. 35 Aztecs, who last year won this event for the first time since 1960, are 13th out of 15 teams at 20-over 370. California leads at -7, followed closely by No. 50 UNLV (-6) and No. 18 Stanford (-4).

SDSU’s second round of the three-day tournament begins at 8:36 a.m. PT Tuesday.
