Harry Takis Tied for Sixth; Aztecs Tied for Ninth at Southern Highlands Collegiate

No. 25 SDSU (+9) up three places on moving day in Las Vegas as Takis is tied for sixth at -4.

LAS VEGAS -- Led by sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia), the San Diego State men’s golf team moved up three places into a tie for ninth on the second day of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Monday in Las Vegas.

The Aztecs, who are 25th in the latest computer rankings, carded a 4-over-par 292 in the second round on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club, and are tied with No. 8 Pepperdine at 9-over 585. Top-ranked Virginia maintained its first-round lead and is at -15, two shots ahead of No. 2 Auburn (-13). No. 35 Washington (-2), No. 12 Illinois (E), No. 3 Florida (+2), No. 4 Texas (+3), No. 14 Oklahoma (+4) and No. 29 Texas A&M (+4) are also ahead of SDSU through 36 holes.

Takis, who is the top player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, shot a 1-over 73 today and is tied for sixth out of 84 golfers at -4. The 2024-25 Mountain West Freshman of the Year had three birdies and four bogeys in Monday’s second round. The only players ahead of Takis are Virginia’s Paul Chang (-7), Texas’s Christiaan Maas (-6), Virginia’s Josh Duangmanee (-5), and Florida’s Ben James (-5) and Jack Turner (-5).

Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) had San Diego State’s low round of the day, carding a 2-under 70. He’s tied for 19th at 1-under 143, up from at T32 placing after Sunday’s first round. Hirayama had four birdies and two bogeys today.

Seniors Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) and Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) are each tied for 60th at +7. Kowack rebounded from a 6-over 78 with a 73 today to move up 14 places. He had three birdies and four bogeys. Chokprajakchat shot a 4-over 76 on Monday with two birdies, two bogeys and two double bogeys.

Junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) shot an 80 and is tied for 78th at +14 for the tournament.

The Aztecs begin their final round at 9:20 a.m. PT Tuesday from the 10th hole along with No. 19 New Mexico and No. 31 UCLA.
