Harry Takis Tied for Second After First Round of Southern Highlands Collegiate

Takis shoots a 5-under 67 as the Aztecs are tied for 12th in elite field in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS -- Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is shot out of the lead after firing a 5-under-par 67 to lead the San Diego State men’s golf team in the first round of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Sunday in Las Vegas.

Takis, who is the top player in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, only trails Virginia’s Paul Chang (-6) on the par-72, 7,510-yard Southern Highlands Golf Club. Takis is tied with the second-ranked player in the rankings in Jackson Koivun of Auburn just a shot back at -5, while Florida’s Ben James (No. 3 ranked player) and Jack Turner, and Auburn’s Josiah Gilbert are tied for fourth at 4-under.

Takis opened with a birdie on his first hole, the par-4, 455-yard 10th, and was 1-under through his front nine. In the back nine, however, Takis sank four birdies without a bogey to sign for a 67.

As a team, the Aztecs, who are 25th in the latest computer rankings, are tied for 12th in the 15-man field with No. 19 New Mexico and No. 46 South Carolina at 5-over 293. SDSU is just a shot back of No. 31 UCLA, No. 33 UNLV and No. 34 Georgia, who are tied for ninth at +4. Top-ranked Virginia leads at -11, while No. 2 Auburn (-6), No. 3 Florida (-5), No. 35 Washington (-5) and No. 12 Illinois (-1) are also under par through 18 holes.

Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) is tied for 32nd in the 84-man field after shooting a 1-over 73. Hirayama was at even-par through his first 17 holes, but bogeyed the par-5, 592-yard 10th. He had three birdies and four bogeys on the day.

Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) is tied for 53rd at +3, making two birdies, which were offset by five bogeys.

Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) and junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) are each tied for 74th at +6. Kowack overcame a 5-over 41 on his front nine with a 1-over 37 on his back nine. He had four birdies, four bogeys and three double bogeys.

Oyama was 1-under through 10 holes but went 7-over for his final eight holes. He had two birdies, four bogeys and two double bogeys.

Monday’s second round begins at 10:20 a.m. PT, with SDSU teeing off from the 10th hole with No. 14 Oklahoma and No. 46 South Carolina.
