CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The San Diego State softball team (8-3) began its time in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic on Thursday night with a game against No. 5/4 Oklahoma (10-1). The Aztecs came up short 10-2 in five innings.
Jazmin Williams singled in the first inning for the Aztecs but was unable to move into scoring position. Oklahoma took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the inning when Kasidi Pickering led off with a single and Kendall Wells hit a two-run home run.
In the second inning, Isabela Emerling led off with a home run to begin a five-run rally. Pickering, Gabbie Garcia, Ella Parker and Wells each drove in a run.
Lala Macario was hit by a pitch in the third. Julie Holcomb took her spot at first base on a fielder’s choice. The next hitter, back-to-back Mountain West Player of the Week, Jade Ignacio launched a two-run homer deep to left field to get the Aztecs on the board and make it 7-2. Matti Kwarta worked around a walk and pitched a scoreless inning with some help from Angie Yellen at third base and Quinn Waiki at shortstop.
Waiki singled in the fourth and moved up to second base but could not get any further. Wells hit another two-run in the bottom of the inning.
Holcomb had the fourth hit for SDSU with two outs in the fifth inning. Sydney Barker led off the bottom of the inning for the Sooners and hit a walk-off solo home run to end the game with a 10-2 score.
THE NOTE
Jade Ignacio hit her second home run of the season, setting a new career-high after hitting one career home run prior to 2026, coming in a 7-1 win against New Mexico on March 23, 2025.

SDSU has two games on Friday in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The Aztecs are set to face UC Riverside around 3 p.m. and Saint Mary’s afterwards, expected to start around 5:30 p.m.
