San Diego State Completes Second Round in Hawaii

Harry Takis leads Aztecs through two rounds in a tie for 10th.

LIHUE, Hawaii -- The San Diego State men’s golf team slipped three places into 11th on the second day of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Friday in Lihue, Hawai’i.

The Aztecs, who are ranked 22nd in the latest computer rankings, shot a 5-over-par 285 on the par-70, 7,098-yard Ocean Course at Hokuala and are at 7-over for the tournament. SDSU is just a shot behind No. 23 Utah (+6) and UTEP (+6) through two rounds. No. 32 Texas A&M and LMU share the lead at -8, while No. 38 UNLV (-5), No. 19 New Mexico (-4) and No. 30 Brigham Young (-4) are also under par in the 19-team field.

Sophomore Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) is tied for 10th out of 111 golfers at 2-under 138 following an even-par 70 today. Takis had four birdies, but also two bogeys and a double bogey on the par-3, 173-yard 17th hole.

Senior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) was the only Aztec under par on Friday with a 68, which has him tied for 17th at even par. Kowack sank five birdies with three bogeys on the day.

Sophomore Kai Hirayama (Arcadia, Calif.) is tied for 30th at +2 following a 3-over 73 on Friday. He had four birdies and four bogeys, along with a triple bogey on the par-3, 210-yard 14th.

Senior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand) and junior Dylan Oyama (Carlsbad, Calif./Pacific Ridge HS) are each tied for 76th at +8 through 36 holes. Chokprajakchat shot a second straight 74, while Oyama was at 75 today.

Competing as an individual, junior Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) is tied for 98th at +11 following a 75 on Friday.

The final round starts at 9 a.m. HT (11 a.m. PT) Saturday.
