Abby Storm Sets School Record on Day One at Trailblazer Invite
Aztec swimmers are in second place after two relays events at the Trailblazer Invitational held Wednesday in St. George, Utah.
ST. GEORGE, Utah – San Diego State's Abby Storm set a school record in her 50 backstroke relay split on Wednesday to highlight fhe Aztec swimming contingent's opening wave of action at the fifth annual Trailblazer Invitational inside Utah Tech's Human Performance Center Pool.
Storm led off SDSU's 200 medley relay with a backstroke sprint of 24.32 to set a new program standard, topping her previous career best of 24.39.
Storm joined forces with Moa Bergdahl, Alli Mann and Alyssa Schiller to record a third-place performance of 1:38.32 in the event, edging the Aztecs' “B” team of Alex Downing, Roni Black, Sierra Tallman and Kaydence Bispo, who took fourth at 1:40.86.
Later, SDSU emerged victorious in the 800 freestyle relay where the foursome of Bispo, Reka Nyiradi, Amber Janky and Melanie Quinto bested the field at 7:13.77, shaving nearly 14 seconds off their seed time of 7:27.55.
In addition, SDSU’s “B” entry the event contributed to the Scarlet and Black’s point-total with a 10th-place finish, as the combo of Masen Karsten, Grace Mering, Camille Seiley and Tallman clocked in at 7:33.91.
In the team standings, the Aztecs compiled 116 points to finish the day in second place behind UC San Diego’s tally of 124 points, while Fresno State and UC Davis are tied for third with 112 points, followed by San Diego (49), Utah Tech (42), California Baptist (36) and Pacific (28).
The Trailblazer Invitational continues on Thursday with two sessions of three individual events, including the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle, along with finals of the 200 freestyle relay. Preliminary action gets underway at 10 a.m. MT/9 a.m. PT, while the finals are set to begin at 5 p.m. MT/4 p.m. PT.
SDSU divers will also participate in the 1-meter springboard event on Thursday to open the Lumberjack Invitational in Flagstaff, Arizona.
