BOISE, Idaho – The San Diego State women’s soccer team shut out Colorado State 1-0 in the Mountain West Quarterfinals on Sunday night to advance to Wednesday’s Semifinals.
San Diego State (9-4-6) and Colorado State (10-4-5) both focused on defense, combining for just four shots on goal in the match.
SDSU keeper Kailey Carlen saved the only shot on goal of the first half, which was taken by Hope Thao at 4:35.
Carlen kept the Rams off the board five minutes into the second half, saving a shot by Mia Massey.
In the 84th minute, Charlie Gerson passed to Mia Hambro Svendsen, who fired a shot from the top of the box into the back of the net to give the Aztecs a late 1-0 lead.
Carlen was given a yellow card in the 87th minute.
A minute later, Carlen preserved the shutout and win by saving a Bridget Arnold shot, the final shot of the night by Colorado State.
San Diego State led in saves (3-0) while Colorado State had more shots (9-6), shots on goal (3-1) and corner kicks (5-3).
THE NOTE I
San Diego State scored a game-winning goal in the final eight minutes of a match to keep its season alive for the second straight contest after Alexis Leath’s 83rd minute match-winner against New Mexico last Thursday sent SDSU to the MW Tournament.

True freshman keeper Kailey Carlen logged her seventh shutout of the season, moving her into a tie with Alexa Madueno, Stephanie Pearson, Katherine Judkins and Elizabeth Judkins for the tenth most in a season in program history.
