FRESNO, Calif. – For the second straight match, the San Diego State women’s soccer team played to a 1-1 draw after a late goal by the opposition, this time in Thursday night’s contest at Fresno State.
Both teams’ defenses controlled much of the first half. San Diego State’s (5-2-4, 1-0-2 MW) Emma Fuller took the only shot on goal of the first half for either side late in the 17th minute, but Fresno State (4-3-4, 1-1-1 MW) keeper Shivani Battaglia made the save to keep the match scoreless.
SDSU’s Mia Hambro Svendsen was given a yellow card in the final 30 seconds of the first half.
San Diego State broke the scoreless tie just over two minutes into the second half on a Lily Boudet goal at the 47:21 mark.
Kailey Carlen made her first save of the night on a Sabrina Welch free kick in the 60th minute.
SDSU leading scorer Victoria Miller forced another Battaglia save in the 82nd minute.
The Bulldogs finally got through the Aztecs’ stout defense as Ciara Wilson scored with an assist from Kayla Robinson with 2:40 remaining in the match.
Fresno State looked to take the lead in the final minute, but Carlen saved a shot by Aniston Renovato to preserve the draw.
Fresno State had more shots (12-6) and corner kicks (8-2), and each team had three shots on goal and two saves.
THE NOTE
San Diego State is now unbeaten across its last eight matches and moves to 5-0-4 on the season when facing unranked opponents.
