SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team (7-4-6, 3-2-4 MW) concludes its regular season on Thursday night with a home match against the New Mexico Lobos (8-3-6, 4-1-4 MW) on the SDSU Sports Deck.
Admission to the match is free and SDSU will honor Grace Goins, Alexys Ocampo, Boston Girman and Taryn Grobbel prior to kickoff.
Last week, the Aztecs got a brace from Alexis Leath with assists from Alexys Ocampo and Katie Senn to earn a 2-2 tie at Colorado State on Thursday. On Sunday, San Diego State played at home against Wyoming and picked up a pivotal 1-0 win over the Cowgirls thanks to a goal from Mia Hambro Svendsen and Kailey Carlen’s sixth shutout of the season.
New Mexico also went 1-0-1 last week with a win over Wyoming, although the Lobos’ draw came at UNLV. UNM began conference play 3-0-3 with wins against Colorado College, Grand Canyon and Nevada and ties against San Jose State, Fresno State and Utah State.
San Diego State has a 15-10-9 record against New Mexico all-time. SDSU is 7-4-2 against UNM in San Diego, 14-9-8 in the series during the Mountain West era (since 1999) and 9-6-5 under Mike Friesen (since 2007).
The Aztecs have closed out every fall regular season since 2012 with a match against New Mexico. Since 2020, SDSU is undefeated in the last game of the regular season, winning 4-1 in 2024 and 2-0 in 2023. The teams tied in 2022 and 2021 while the Aztecs knocked off Nevada 3-1 in the finale of the spring 2021 shortened regular season.
Should San Diego State make the MW Championship, the Aztecs would likely open play at 4 p.m. MT/3 p.m. PT on Sunday in the three-seed against the six-seed match. SDSU has a chance to instead play in the four-seed against the five-seed match, which will start three hours later. The entire tournament will be held at Boas Soccer Complex in Boise, Idaho and streamed on the Mountain West Network.
