- Following its third shutout of the season to become bowl eligible en route to retaining the Old Oil Can trophy at Fresno State, San Diego State returns to America’s Finest City to play host to Wyoming for Homecoming on Saturday. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. PT at Snapdragon Stadium, airing on CBS Sports Network and San Diego Sports 760, the flagship radio station of San Diego State athletics.
- Saturday is the first home game for the Aztecs (6-1, 3-0 MW) since Oct. 3, which will be a period of 29 days on gameday.
- No team in the country has played fewer home games than SDSU’s three this season (San Diego State is one of 19 programs which have played exactly three home contests).
- The Aztecs are coming off a 23-0 win at Fresno State on Saturday. It was SDSU’s season-leading third shutout of the season, the first time San Diego State has shut out three teams in the same year in its Division I history (since 1969). It was also the first time the Bulldogs were shut out at home since 1980.
- It was the fifth consecutive victory for the Aztecs, which is tied for the 10th-longest active streak in the country and the longest win streak since a seven-game stretch to start the 2021 campaign.
- The win made SDSU bowl eligible for the first time since 2022, but for the 14th time in the last 16 seasons (since 2010).
- At 6-1, San Diego State is off to its best start since starting 7-0 in 2021. That 2021 team set a program record with 12 victories (12-2) and finished 25th in the final Associated Press Top 25 Poll.
- After finishing with a 3-9 record and losing the final six games of the 2024 campaign, the Aztecs have already doubled their win total and are bowl eligible before November.
- Out of the 20 schools that had three or fewer wins last year, only SDSU and Southern Miss are already bowl eligible this season.
- San Diego State is receiving votes in both the AP Top 25 poll and the Coaches poll for the third straight week. The Aztecs have 14 votes in the AP poll (up from seven last week), the 31st most in the country. In the coaches poll, SDSU also has 14 votes (up from four last week), the 34th most.
- In San Diego State’s 23-0 win at Fresno State, running back Lucky Sutton ran for a career-high 131 yards and a touchdown, his third 100-yard game of the season (and career). On the season, Sutton has rushed for 662 yards and seven touchdowns on 126 attempts (5.3 avg.), averaging 94.6 yards per game.
- Gabe Plascencia made three field goals to stretch his streak to 25 consecutive makes, the longest streak in program and Mountain West history, and the longest active streak in the country. Plascencia, who accounted for 11 of the Aztecs’ 23 points, was named the MW Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday for his efforts. “Hefty Lefty” is 13-for-13 for the season and 30-for-31 for his career, the highest field goal percentage (.968) in NCAA FBS history (NCAA’s criteria of min. 1.2 field goals per game and 30 made field goals). Plascencia hasn’t missed a field goal since Aug. 31, 2024. On Saturday vs. Wyoming, which will be 427 days since his last miss.
- Linebacker Tano Letuli added a 31-yard interception return for a score, SDSU’s fourth defensive touchdown of the season (T-3rd in the country) and fifth non-offensive touchdown (T-3rd in the country).
- Amazingly, this is the sixth time that SDSU (6-1) has been at least 6-1 through seven games over the last 10 seasons. Out of the five previous times it started with at least a 6-1 record, San Diego State has four 10-wins seasons, including 2016 (started 6-1, finished 11-3), 2017 (started 6-1, finished 10-3), 2019 (started 6-1, finished 10-3) and 2021 (started 7-0, finished 12-2). In all five previous instances, SDSU made a bowl game, and both the 2016 and 2021 teams finished ranked 25th in the final AP Top 25 poll.
- In home games this season, the Aztecs are 3-0 and outscoring the opposition, 121-24, with two shutouts.
- Through seven games, the SDSU defense leads the Mountain West in points allowed per game (10.43, 2nd in FBS), rushing touchdowns allowed (2, T-2nd in FBS), pass efficiency rating (96.79, 3rd in FBS), touchdowns allowed (8, T-3rd in FBS), defensive touchdowns (4, T-3rd in FBS), first downs allowed (103, 4th in FBS), red zone percentage (66.67, 4th in FBS), yards allowed per play (3.94, 4th in FBS), third down conversion (26.61, 5th in FBS), yards allowed per passing attempt (5.16, 5th in FBS), yards allowed per game (255.00, 9th in FBS), rushing yards allowed per carry (2.73, 9th in FBS), rushing yards allowed per game (88.43, 10th in FBS), passing touchdowns allowed (6, T-11th in FBS), yards per completion (10.14, 15th in FBS) and passing yards allowed per game (166.67, 16th in FBS).
- San Diego State has allowed just 73 points, including 36 of those at Washington State on Sept. 6 and 24 on Oct. 3 vs. Colorado State. If you take away those two games, the Aztecs have allowed just 13 points in the five other contests (shutouts vs. Stony Brook, vs. California and at Fresno State, three points at Northern Illinois and 10 at Nevada).
- The 73 points allowed are the third fewest allowed by SDSU through seven games in its Division I history, only trailing 48 in 1970 and 49 in 1975.
- LB Owen Chambliss leads the San Diego State defense with 58 tackles, including six tackles for loss and two sacks. CB Chris Johnson has 38 tackles, three interceptions and six pass breakups, while S Dalesean Staley has 34 tackles, an interception, forced fumble and six pass breakups. Letuli has 30 tackles, despite missing over two games due to injury, and EDGE Trey White has 28 tackles, six tackles for loss, four sacks and nine quarterback hurries.
- On July 1, 2026, the Aztecs officially become a member of the new Pac-12 along with league stalwarts Oregon State and Washington State, as well as Boise State, Colorado State, Gonzaga (for men’s basketball only), Fresno State, Texas State and Utah State.
- SDSU is 65-34 (.657) in league play since the current 12-team Mountain West conference began play in 2013 (includes championship and bowl games), which ranks as the second-best mark in the league behind Boise State (86-18, .827). Utah State (third, .586), Fresno State (fourth, .578) and Colorado State (sixth, .490) each will join San Diego State in the new Pac-12 next season.
- San Diego State and Wyoming will meet for the 40th time on Saturday, with the Aztecs leading the all-time series, 20-19. Ten of the last 16 games in the series have been decided by five points or less with the last four meetings decided by a total of 11 points.
- This is the first time the Cowboys (4-4, 2-2 MW) have played at Snapdragon Stadium. UW is the last Mountain West team to play at Snapdragon Stadium and hasn’t played a game in San Diego since 2019, a 26-22 Aztec win.
- After the Wyoming game, SDSU travels to Hawai’i to play the Rainbow Warriors on Saturday, Nov. 11.
