SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Diego State women’s soccer team emerged victorious by a 3-2 score from a back-and-forth match at San Jose State on Sunday.
San Diego State (6-2-5, 2-0-3 MW) took an early lead on Mia Hambro Svendsen’s first collegiate goal just six minutes and three seconds into the match. Eva Vespa, making her first career start, and Lily Boudet earned assists on the score.
Just a couple seconds after the match resumed, Kailey Carlen made her first save of the match on a shot by San Jose State (1-10-3, 0-3-3 MW) player Maryam Ladkani. Simultaneously, SDSU’s Alexyz Nakamoto was given a yellow card.
Ten minutes later, Carlen made another save, this time on a shot from Joliye Brass.
Boudet put a shot on target early in the 37th minute but SJSU keeper Paige Fry made her first save of the day.
The Spartans tied the match at one at the 41:36 mark on an own goal.
Carlen saved a deep shot from Ladkani as time expired in the first half.
San Jose State took the lead midway through the 57th minute when Paige Pineda Aliamus scored with an assist from Charlotte Memoly.
The teams traded shots on goal with Victoria Miller from SDSU and Lily Montesinos from SJSU, but both were saved.
For the second straight match, Alexys Ocampo tied things at two, this time coming in the opening seconds of the 76th minute.
Alexis Leath was given a yellow card a minute and a half later.
Ciara Jade Mitchell put shots on target that were saved by Fry in the 81st and 85th minutes.
The Aztecs went back on top when Emma Fuller ran a give-and-go with Alexyz Nakamoto at 85:38.
The SDSU defense prevented any more shots by the Spartans to preserve the 3-2 win.
San Diego State had more shots (12-9), shots on goal (7-5), fouls (10-9) and corner kicks (9-3) while each team had four saves.
THE NOTE
San Diego State’s ten-match undefeated streak matches its longest since the 2023 campaign, when the Aztecs were unbeaten from September 3 through October 12. The last time SDSU had a longer undefeated streak was a decade ago, when the 2015 squad won or tied its final dozen matches.
