SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team (4-2-2) begins Mountain West competition this week. The Aztecs will head to Grand Canyon (5-3) at 7 p.m. on Thursday night and host Colorado College (3-3-2) at noon on Sunday. Both matches will appear on the Mountain West Network.
Last week, the Aztecs continued their unbeaten streak to five matches by shutting out both Nevada (4-0) and Hawai’i (0-0) as Grace Goins earned Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week and goalkeeper Kailey Carlen garnered Mountain West Freshman of the Week accolades. Victoria Miller had the game-winning goal against the Wolf Pack on her team-leading fifth goal of the season while Mia Lane and Alexis Leath also scored in the match. Katie Senn, Rory Schank and Alexyz Nakamoto assisted on those goals in last Thursday’s contest.
The Lopes have alternated between wins and losses in their last five matches. All five of Grand Canyon’s wins this season have come in shutouts: CSUN (1-0), Portland State (1-0), Oregon (2-0), Idaho (1-0) and Northern Arizona (1-0). GCU was bested by UC Irvine in its season opener but has only lost to Sam Houston and Arizona since.
The Aztecs have never played Grand Canyon before. Thursday’s match will mark the Lopes’ first conference contest as a member of the Mountain West in any sport.
Colorado College has yet to win, lose or tie in consecutive matches this season. All three of the Tigers’ wins have come on the road, at New Mexico State, Canisius and Northern Colorado. CC’s first two home matches, against Denver and UTSA, both ended in scoreless ties with the other being a 3-2 loss to UC San Diego, who San Diego State played in a scoreless draw. The Tigers suffered an August loss at Buffalo and have dropped two of their last three, coming against UC San Diego and Kansas State.
San Diego State and Colorado College have played 15 times with seven Aztec victories and five ties. SDSU is 6-2-4 against the Tigers during the Mike Friesen era and 5-1-3 at home including a 4-0-2 record on the SDSU Sports Deck. The Aztecs won 3-1 the last time the teams played in San Diego in 2023 before a scoreless draw last season in Colorado Springs.
Following this week’s action, San Diego State heads to Fresno State next week for a match against the Bulldogs at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 2, on the Mountain West Network.
