SAN DIEGO – San Diego State volleyball freshman Zara Stewart was named to the all-California Tournament team for her performances in two matches against the host Golden Bears and San Francisco in Berkeley, Aug. 29-30.
A native of Bonita Springs, Florida, Stewart averaged 3.86 digs (27 overall) and 2.14 assists (15 overall) in seven sets at the libero position this past weekend while contributing three services aces and one kill in her first collegiate action.
Stewart anchored an Aztec defense that limited two opponents to a combined .072 hitting percentage for the tournament. She also committed just two reception errors in 39 chances during her first two collegiate matches for a .949 reception percentage.
Stewart flashed her all-round game with a team-high 17 digs (4.25/set) vs. Cal in her collegiate debut, adding seven assists, one kill and one service ace in four sets.
The following day vs. USF, the SDSU newcomer recorded her second straight double-digit dig total with 10 scoops (3.33/set) in a 3-0 sweep of the Dons. In addition, Stewart dished out seven assists and served up two aces.
Stewart and the Aztecs (1-1) hit the road once again this week when they travel to the Lone Star State, Sept. 4-6, for the Flo Hyman Classic in Houston, Texas, where the Scarlet and Black will battle the host Houston Cougars, LSU and Omaha on successive days.
