SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team earned its third straight victory, and second by a 4-0 margin, on Thursday night, shutting out Nevada 4-0 on the SDSU Sports Deck.
San Diego State (4-2-1) got on the board quickly when Katie Senn passed to Victoria Miller, who launched the ball past Nevada (1-6-1) keeper Mia Collins, in the eighth minute. The goal was the fifth of the season for the sophomore transfer, who passed Grace Goins for the career scoring lead on the active Aztec roster.
A minute later, the Wolf Pack’s Isabella Srodes was issued a yellow card.
The Aztecs doubled their lead late in the 14th minute on a Nevada own goal. Miller was the last Aztec to touch the ball before it found the back of the net.
SDSU keeper Kailey Carlen logged her fourth shutout of the season, and the true freshman has a .882 save percentage with just two goals allowed over her last four matches. She picked up her first save of the night on an Olivia Koop shot in the 24th minute.
Mia Lane forced another Collins save in the 36th minute before putting one past her five minutes later with an assist from Rory Schank.
Alexyz Nakamoto put another shot on goal 18 seconds later, but it was saved, and San Diego State carried a 3-0 lead into halftime.
The scoring slowed down in the second half, but SDSU continued to put pressure on Collins as Briahna Gieger had a shot on goal in the 54th minute followed by two more from Lane in the 56th and 58th minutes.
Carlen stopped her final two shots of the night in the 71st and 73rd minutes, by Naima Castro and Olivia Loomis, respectively.
In the 76th minute, Alexis Leath took a nice shot, but Collins stopped it. Six minutes later, Leath got the last laugh, getting one by Collins for her first collegiate goal with an assist from Alexyz Nakamoto.
San Diego State was able to put two more shots on target, but Nevada saved Eva Vespa’s shot in the 84th minute and Ciara Jade Mitchell’s shot in the 86th minute to preserve the 4-0 score.
The Aztecs finished the match with more shots (18-11), shots on goal (11-3) and corner kicks (4-3) while the Wolf Pack had more saves (7-3) and each team had seven fouls.
