SAN DIEGO
-- The San Diego State football team went through a mock game for its 19th practice of fall camp on Wednesday morning at the on-campus facility.

After breakfast and meetings, the Aztecs simulated a game from start to finish in helmets and spiders under another beautiful San Diego morning under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-to-upper-70s with a noticeable breeze. After stretching, SDSU went through various scenarios on the grass field, scripting about 80 plays overall, including special teams.

Head coach Sean Lewis has liked what the team has done through 19 practices of fall camp so far.

“(I’m) really pleased with the effort we had in fall camp,” said Lewis. “We wanted to start fast, and I thought we did that this camp. We were much further along this year compared to last (year).”

Ryan Lindley, in his fourth full season as a coach at San Diego State, is in his second year as the tight ends coach. Lindley, SDSU’s all-time passing leader, also serves as the team’s senior offensive analyst after previously working as a defensive analyst at Mississippi State (2021-22), an offensive analyst at Utah in 2020, the running backs coach for the Cleveland Browns toward the end of 2018 and their quarterbacks coach in 2019.

Lindley has been impressed with recently named starting quarterback Jayden Denegal.

“JD is a heck of a talent (and) he's a great kid,” said Lindley. “It's been really fun to watch him. I think now in this transfer portal era, we deal with a lot of different levels of guys, when they're coming down from a blue blood like Michigan. Not to disparage anybody else, but you get some that I don't think really handle it the right way. And he's a guy that there isn’t any level of entitlement. Now there's a level of respect you have for him. The guy's been on a national championship team. He's one of the 105 that was in that building when they won it all. It's been a lot of fun to watch him work day in and day out, and just kind of get to know him more as a kid. We're going to have a lot of fun doing it with him through the ups and downs.”

Lindley also wants to see his tight ends help the run game with the goal of rushing for at least five yards per carry.

“I think the great part of that, when we all talk about finishing right is continuing to maintain pressure on blocks, and a lot of that really just comes with your approach,” said Lindley. “I'm a former quarterback coaching the tight ends. I take a lot of our run game philosophy from (run game coordinator/offensive lines coach) Mike Schmidt. He's our run game coordinator. That's where we're going to take all things on. We’ve all got to speak the same language. So, the biggest thing is how we're going to take that from where we were last year, increasing that yards per carry number is how we finish on blocks.”

One of the guys Lindley and the Aztecs brought in was Seth Adams. Adams spent the last two years at tight end at Southeastern Louisiana (2024) and Kennesaw State (2023) after previously playing offensive line at KSU (2022) and Cumberlands (2020-21).

“We liked what we saw in film (of Seth) and what we loved about him, the guy had a nature to him that was physical, and he didn't just block people, he finished them,” said Lindley. “He loves football and he loves competing. We could start with something there and he’s set the standard in that room. He’s going to leave his mark.”

Adams goes by the name “Boogeyman,” a name he got for his play at Kennesaw State.

“A couple years ago when I was at Kennesaw State, and I first got moved to tight end, there were coaches at Kennesaw that were like, ‘We don't know how this is going to be,” Adams recently said at practice. “They put me in, threw me in a few plays here and there, and then I just started finishing people at practice, taking people to the ground, being physical. The coaches were like, ‘Who's that guy right there? Who's that guy?’ And then my offensive coordinator, I'll never forget, he was like, ‘That's the Boogeyman.’ And so from then on, it's kind of stuck. When I step on the field, I make sure my presence is known.

“My roots are as a former offensive lineman, so yeah, I have to live up to that standard and bring that physicality. I want to rush for over 1,000 yards this year, five yards to carry. That's what I want. That's what I'm looking for, to be one of the most physical run units in the Mountain West.”

The 2025 opener against Stony Brook on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Snapdragon Stadium is set for 7 p.m. PT.

San Diego State also has home games vs. California (Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Colorado State (Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Wyoming (Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. PT), Boise State (Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. PT) and San Jose State (Nov. 22, time TBA).
