Practice No. 17 - Aug. 18
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State football team practiced for the 18th time in fall camp on Tuesday morning at the on-campus facility.
Following breakfast, special teams and positions meetings, and a walk-through, the Aztecs went for just over two hours under sunny, cloudless skies and temperatures in the mid-to-high 70s with a plentiful breeze. SDSU utilized both the turf field and grass field, practicing in shells.
Beginning on the turf field, SDSU did special teams individual drills, pops, win, team compete, more special teams and individual drills. The defense won the team compete session and earned popsicles for a reward. The grass field practice portion consisted of OTBs, 1-on-1s, team execution, third down skelly and team play-it (out drives).
Zac Barton enters his second season as the team’s associate head coach and special teams coach. Last year, both of his kickers earned all-Mountain West honors with Tyler Pastula garnering first-team accolades as a punter and Gabe Plascencia making the second team as a kicker. Additionally, spot returners Chris Johnson (cornerback) and Jordan Napier (wide receiver) earned honorable mention for their versatile play.
Barton is proud of carrying on the historic success of the special teams unit at San Diego State.
“The standard here has been nuts,” said Barton. “Other places I've been, you're going in (and) the culture wasn't at a place where you wanted it. You come here and the special teams the last decade has been elite. Hasn't been good, hasn't been kind of good, it's been in the top 1 percent good. That's the standard we’ve got to try to live up to every day. And those guys know that. We have the guys here coming back and the specialists here to be that, and that's what we need to be. We need them to help us win games.”
Plascencia was named the Mountain West preseason special teams player of the year last month. Plascencia made 13 of 14 field goals last year for the best field goal percentage (.929) in program history. The left-footed kicker has made 12 consecutive field goals entering 2025, tied for the sixth-longest active streak in the country and the second longest by an Aztec since at least the 1996 season.
Plascencia, however, isn’t looking at last season’s success as an indication of how he will do this year.
“I don't look too much into (last season’s success),” said Plascencia. “I like to look back at the things that worked and the things that didn't work. Obviously, I didn't have a perfect season last year. I feel like no one really does, but it's just kind of building off the things that you can control. I had a few mistakes last year, but we'll have a better season this year.”
Consistency is Plascencia’s focus for 2025.
“I feel the distance has always been there, it's just more getting more consistent from those deep ranges,” added Plascencia. “I know we've been working a lot more of that in camp, it’s just trying to be more consistent. That's our main goal. Those moon shots are always the nice ones, but we want to make sure we're consistent from 40 yards in.”
Hunter Green, meanwhile, appears ready to continue the recent success of Aztec punters. A third-team FCS All-American at Northern Colorado last year, Green averaged 46.3 yards per punt, which would’ve ranked fifth in FBS play last year and eclipsed all-MW first-team punter Pastula (46.1) of San Diego State. An Aztec punter has made a Mountain West first or second team in five consecutive seasons, including Tanner Kuljian (second team in 2020), Matt Araiza (first team and Ray Guy Award winner in 2021), Jack Browning (first team in 2022, second team in 2023) and Tyler Pastula (first team in 2024).
“Obviously there's pressure, and I feel like there's a high expectation because of the recent success of the punters here,” said Green. “But I have high goals and high expectations for myself. So, the expectations that are kind of given to me from the people that want to see a high-level punter, I feel like it matches the expectations I have for myself. There is pressure because those guys succeeded, but I want to be up there. It wasn't like I came here, and I had lower expectations than that.”
Like Plascencia, Green is working on his consistency.
“I am still working towards that,” added Green. “Nobody's perfect. Even the punters in the NFL, they have some off games and there are times where they can be better and more consistent. If I want to get to that standard where I can compete in the NFL, then I just need to keep on working towards getting more consistent. The dudes who are the most consistent are the guys that hit a good ball and hurt other teams.”
The 19th of 24 fall practices is set for Wednesday morning before the opener against Stony Brook on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Snapdragon Stadium at 7 p.m. PT.
San Diego State also has home games vs. California (Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Colorado State (Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Wyoming (Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. PT), Boise State (Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. PT) and San Jose State (Nov. 22, time TBA).
