SAN DIEGO – The San Diego State women’s soccer team earned its first win of 2025 on Sunday night with a 1-0 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on the SDSU Sports Deck.

Cal State Bakersfield (0-2) opened on the attack, but San Diego State (1-1) keeper Kailey Carlen saved a shot by Kim Garcia just 3:52 into the match. The Aztecs logged their first goal of the season just over two minutes later when Katie Senn passed to Mia Lane, who found Victoria Miller for the score at the 6:15 mark. The Aztecs looked to add on around ten minutes later, but Kamy Anaya saved another shot on target from Miller before three more SDSU shots were blocked or off target. Ciara Jade Mitchell nearly scored at 24:51 but the shot hit the crossbar. Carlen kept the clean sheet intact with her second save in the 33rd minute. Eva Vespa stole the ball and got a shot by the keeper early in the 39th minute but the Roadrunners’ Mya Fortun headed it away. CSUB’s Mya Clarke was issued a yellow card for contact on Vespa after review.

In the second half, the defenses started out strong with the teams combining for just one shot attempt in the first 23 minutes. The Roadrunners were able to get off just two shots in the final 45 minutes due to some fantastic defense by the Aztecs. Miller put her third shot of the night on goal in the 83rd minute but it was saved by Anaya. A minute later, CSUB’s Daisha Wagner was given a yellow card.

The Aztecs finished the match with more shots (17-6), shots on goal (5-2), corner kicks (8-1) and fouls (10-7) while the Roadrunners tallied more saves (4-2).

Karoline Lundstrom and Ciara Jade Mitchell made their first career starts. The goal was the first of Mitchell’s career and Carlen put together her first career shutout. Lane picked up the second assist of her career with the other coming against Nevada on September 26 last season. Senn previously had a pair of assists in 2023, both in home conference matches against Boise State and Wyoming.

The Aztecs face a tough test this week with a road match at current No. 7 Stanford. The Cardinal are 2-0 with a 12-1 goal differential including a 5-1 win against No. 16 Santa Clara earlier on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday night and will be streamed on ACC Network X.
