SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego State football team continued its final week of fall camp on Monday morning at the on-campus facility.
The Aztecs worked in full pads for the third time in four practices under sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s with a nice breeze. After breakfast, morning meetings and a walk-through, SDSU practiced for the first half on the turf field, doing team flex (stretching), led by freshman wide receiver Marcus Mozer, special teams individual drills, pops, Oil Can drill, team compete, which was won by the defense, alpha rangers, individual drills and cross over run to win drills.
The second half moved to the grass field and consisted of ball security, 1-on-1s, gold zone lockout, more special teams, gold zone skelly and team play-it outs. In all, San Diego State practiced for over two hours.
Demetrius Sumler enters his eighth year leading the cornerbacks and returns both starters in seniors Chris Johnson and Bryce Phillips. An honorable-mention all-Mountain West performer last year, Johnson totaled 67 tackles, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and an interception in 2024. Phillips, meanwhile, had 40 tackles, four tackles for loss, an interception and a pass breakup in 2024 in his first season as an Aztec after spending two years at Tennessee State and another at Santa Ana College.
“The game has slowed down for them,” said Sumler. “Both those guys have played a lot of snaps (compared to last year). Those guys getting a whole year in the system, we simplified it a little bit. They're just playing faster. They're seeing things faster, and it's a lot more comfortable, because it's not as new to your veterans back there.
“(Defensive backs), a lot of times when they’ve got a route cover, they want to peek at the quarterback, and then they lose position on the wide receiver. So that's been a big deal for us. And then just kind of taking their game to the next level, looking at the quarterback mechanics, seeing what they're doing. The quarterback is looking at me, I'm looking at him. He keeps staring over there. He might throw the ball that way. So just kind of try to get them a master's degree (in football), right? They know the scheme. They know what they're doing. They know the base techniques. But now trying to give them those extra tools and tips to kind of take their game to the next level.”
Johnson is looking forward to his final season with the SDSU defense, which returns all 11 starters.
“I feel like we're in a great spot,” said Johnson. “I don't want to say we're picking up where we left off last season, because obviously last season didn't go how we wanted, but it's feeling really similar. As far as our bond with each other, we grew a lot closer. As far as the communication, it feels like everything's on point and it's like second nature for everyone.”
Johnson had praise for both the San Diego State defensive coordinator Rob Aurich and Sumler with the cornerbacks.
“Coach Rob, I definitely like the fire that he brings and he challenges us every day with looks he's given us,” said Johnson. “Coach Sumler, he's a great coach, the best DB coach in the country. I've been here four years and I never thought about leaving to go learn from a different coach. He knows everything about the quarterback position. He pushes us every day, and he'll sit there and tell us, like he couldn't do it himself, but he knows we can, so he expects the best at all of us.”
Phillips was able to come back an extra season because of the NCAA’s new rule regarding JUCO eligibility. He mentioned a few things he’d like to work on to better prepare him for the NFL Draft.
“My competitiveness, (my) competitive maturity and just finishing games,” said Phillips. “That's something I want to work on personally. And as a defense, we all want to work on that. Just playing better throughout the whistle on snap 50 just like snap one, playing the same way (all the way through). We‘ve got to finish games better, and that comes with the overall team. But as a defense, we’ve got to finish the second half.”
The 18th of 24 fall practices is set for Tuesday morning before the opener against Stony Brook on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Snapdragon Stadium at 7 p.m. PT.
San Diego State also has home games vs. California (Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Colorado State (Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. PT), Wyoming (Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. PT), Boise State (Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. PT) and San Jose State (Nov. 22, time TBA).
