SDSU Moves up to Eighth after Two Days of NCAA Tallahassee Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The San Diego State men’s golf team carded an even-par 288 to move up three places into eighth after the second day of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Tuesday in Tallahassee, Florida. The 288 on the par-72, 7,520-yard Seminole Legacy Golf Club was tied for the fourth-lowest score of the day.

The Aztecs, who earned the No. 3 seed in the regional as the 15th-ranked team in the latest Scoreboard powered by clippd computer rankings, are at 6-over 582 through 36 holes, only trailing No. 11 and regional host Florida State (-21), No. 3 Ole Miss (-7), No. 22 Georgia (-6), No. 46 New Mexico (-2), Augusta (-1), No. 39 Notre Dame (E) and USC (+5).

The top-five squads and lowest individual not on those teams from the Tallahassee Regional will advance to a spot in the NCAA Championships, slated for May 22-28, at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in nearby Carlsbad, California, hosted by Texas.

Junior Tyler Kowack (San Diego/Canyon Crest Academy) is the only SDSU player under par at 2-under 142 following a 2-under 70 today. Only seven players in the 75-man field shot better than Kowack’s 70, which featured four birdies and two bogeys. Kowack (-2) enters Wednesday’s final round in a tie for fourth among the individuals not among the top-five teams, trailing Notre Dame’s Jacob Modleski (-6), Northwestern’s Cameron Adam (-4) and USC’s Jaden Dumdumaya (-3).

Freshman Harry Takis (Brisbane, Australia) shot an even-par 72 in the second round and is tied for 22nd at 1-over 145. Takis, the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, had two birdies and two bogeys in today’s round.

Senior Justin Hastings (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) fell into a tie for 50th at +6 following a 7-over 79 on Tuesday. Hastings, the Mountain West Golfer of the Year, had two birdies on the day, along with seven bogeys and a double bogey on the par-4, 390-yard seventh hole.

Sophomore Nathan Sampson (Temecula, Calif.) is tied for 55th at +8 after shooting a 2-over 74 today. Starting on the 10th hole, Sampson was at 5-over through 12 holes but birdied three of his final six holes to get back to +2 for the day.

Junior Chanachon Chokprajakchat (Bangkok, Thailand), who was unable to play in yesterday’s first round, shot an even-par 72 to score for SDSU on Tuesday, sinking two birdies with two bogeys.

Florida State’s Luke Clanton shot his second consecutive 6-under 66 and leads Modleski by six strokes heading into tomorrow’s final round. Clanton is bogey-free so far through 36 holes.

San Diego State (+6) will look to get into the top-5 on Wednesday when it tees off from the first hole at 5:25 a.m. ET (8:25 a.m. PT) with USC (+5) and No. 27 Louisville (+7)
